Soft serve goes goth

White, pink, beige, green, yellow — all legitimate colors for scoops of ice cream atop a crispy cone. If you think about the cool, creamy, classic summer dessert staple, really any color comes to mind except for maybe, well, black. First spotted in the U.S. as a coconut ash flavor last summer at New York City’s Morgenstern’s, rich black sesame ice cream has actually existed in Japan for years. Squid ink ice cream can be found overseas, as well, but Los Angeles’ Little Damage Ice Cream Shop’s almond-charcoal creation is the only black ice cream that also comes in a gothic black cone, adding infinitely to its coolness factor. Charcoal has been popping up recently in other trends, as well. It came to the pressed juice scene with claims that it had detoxifying properties, and has also been added to mud masks and other beauty products, like face masks and pore strips, with claims of similar benefits. The charcoal…

Edible cookie dough 2 ways

There are two kinds of people in the world — those who can’t wait for warm cookies to come out of the oven and those who have no dough left when it’s time to make those cookies. If you’re part of the better half, try this recipe below. It’s completely safe to eat since it has no eggs, and it can keep for a few days if properly refrigerated. Cookie Dough Ingredients Servings: 4-6  2 cups flour 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup butter, softened 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon salt Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350˚F. 2. Spread flour on a baking tray and bake for 5 minutes — this kills bacteria. 3. In a medium bowl, mix flour, sugar, butter, vanilla, milk and salt. 4. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Then separate into 2 sections (or more if you want to make more varieties!). 5. Enjoy! Chocolate Chip M&Ms Cookie…

Free cones for a cause at Dairy Queen

What better way to celebrate spring than with a free ice cream cone? Dairy Queen announced stores (excluding DQs in malls) will be giving away one free small vanilla soft-serve cone all day long on March 20. Dubbed “Free Cone Day”, the fast-food company uses this day to collect donations for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, a group of about 170 hospitals across the US and Canada that treat more than 32 million children every year. Over the last 30 years, Dairy Queen has raised more than $100 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. American Dairy Queen Corporation’s executive vice president of marketing, Barry Westrum said, “We can’t think of a better way to show our appreciation to fans, kick off the spring season and support such an amazing cause than with a Free Cone Day.” So grab a few friends next Monday, and make a small donation to DQ’s favorite charity. You’ll be…

Raw cookie dough is latest NYC food fad

(Associated Press) Raw cookie dough is New York City’s latest unlikely food fad. People who would rather lick the spoon than eat a baked cookie are waiting in long lines outside a month-old New York City shop that sells scoops of dough in a cup or a cone like ice cream. Kristen Tomlan is the 28-year-old founder of DO (pronounced ‘doh’) Cookie Dough Confections. She says she’s selling 1,500 pounds of cookie dough a day at her Greenwich Village storefront. Nancy Lerman said she’s been twice before and has tried most of the flavors, which include chocolate chip, red velvet and peanut butter snickerdoodle. She said raw dough is yummier than a baked cookie. But is it safe? The store’s website, cookiedonyc.com, says, “Finally, cookie dough that you don’t have to pretend you are going to bake! All ingredients in each of our delicious, homemade recipes are completely safe to…
