It might still look like winter outside, but you can celebrate the first official day of spring tomorrow, March 20, 2018, with a free treat from either Dairy Queen or Rita’s Italian Ice (or both, because let’s be real). Both chains are continuing their traditions of bringing in the spring equinox with freebies for fans. Dairy Queen’s fourth annual “Free Cone Day” will be held nationwide. The ice cream chain will hand out one free small vanilla soft-serve cone per person while supplies last. DQ has more than 4,400 U.S. locations. Mall locations will not be participating. The DQ event also serves as a fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Visitors are encouraged to make a small donation to the charity. Last year nearly $300,000 was raised. Rita’s Italian Ice will be giving away free Italian ice as it has done so now for 26 years. The tradition is one many look…

Here are 7 things you never knew about the iconic McDonald’s seasonal green shake. 1. The first shake was introduced in 1970. It was originally called the St. Patrick’s Day Shake, but was scrapped years later for something a little more creative — the Shamrock Shake. 2. Shamrock Shakes were a charitable endeavor What do Shamrock Shakes have to do with the Philadelphia Eagles and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children? Easy chocolate hazelnut, pumpkin brownies

For an easy way to make brownies, try this flourless pumpkin, chocolate hazelnut recipe. It’s seriously the most moist dessert I’ve ever had. It’s sort of a cross between cake and brownies, but whatever you call it, you’ll love this sweet treat alone or served with ice cream and walnuts in a sundae. All of the ingredients go right into the blender, so there’s nearly no clean-up. It tastes mostly of chocolatey hazelnut, but if you want more fall flavor try adding cinnamon or nutmeg. chocolate hazelnut Pumpkin bread Makes 1 loaf Ingredients 1 1/4 cups chocolate hazelnut spread 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 eggs 3/4 cup pumpkin purée 1 1/2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional) 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional) Directions Preheat oven to 350ºF. Spray the inside of a loaf pan with cooking spray, set aside. Add chocolate hazelnut spread, cocoa powder, eggs, pumpkin purée, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg into blender…

Pumpkin pie milkshake recipe

Fall temperatures don’t exactly scream ice cream, but this milkshake is pure pumpkin bliss. It’s like pumpkin pie in a glass, but better. This creamy concoction is perfect to whip up when you have a bit of purée left over from baking a pie. It only takes a few tablespoons of the canned purée, along with some cinnamon, cloves and other classic fall spices to replicate the most awesome of all autumn desserts. So break out the blender for this delicious holiday indulgence. Pumpkin pie milkshake Serves 2 Ingredients 2 1/4 cups of vanilla ice cream 1 cup skim milk (or your preferred milk) 4 tbsp pumpkin purée 1/4 tsp nutmeg 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp allspice 1/4 tsp ground cloves whipped cream for topping Directions I’ve make this milkshake at least 20 times. 3-ingredient easy mango sorbet recipe

In a world of sugary desserts, one sweet treat brings all the flavor without the guilt. Sorbet is often served at higher-end restaurants or even as a palate cleanser between courses, but you need not go out for a fancy meal or shell out $6 a pint for the store-bought stuff. Make it right at home. This 3-ingredient recipe is perfect for people wanting to eliminate processed sugars or dairy from their diet, while still looking to indulge with friends and family. But don’t get sorbet confused with sherbet. Sorbet (pronounced sor-bay) is typically made from two ingredients — fruit and sugar. Due to the lack or milk, it has a slightly icy texture and needs to sit a bit at room temperature before eating. Sherbet is also made from fruit and sugar, but according the the FDA, sherbet must contain between one and two perfect milkfat. (For reference, ice cream must contain at least…

Global vanilla shortage will see pastry, ice cream prices soar

The world-wide vanilla shortage is coming to an ice cream cone near you. Pastry chefs and ice cream makers alike are looking to cut back overall consumption due to the rising cost of fair-trade vanilla, meaning that the recipes of our favorite summer sweets could be effected. And we have no one but ourselves to blame. The high demand from consumers, in recent years, switching to all-natural foods has caused the shortage. The problem was then compounded by major corporations like Nestle and Hershey’s that, in response to consumer demand, declared they were then switching from cheaper, chemically created synthetic versions of vanilla to all-natural varieties, too — meaning that they want vanilla from orchid seeds, and not factories. Factories can crank out the synthetic stuff around the clock, but there just aren’t enough vanilla pods in the world to meet demand. A few years ago, a 1-gallon bottle of organic, fair-trade vanilla would cost about $64 — today,…

Ben & Jerry’s Shows Love for Bob Marley with “One Love”

As iconic as Bob Marley was in the world of music, he became even more of an inspiration for promoting peace and unity around the world — and next, apparently, ice cream. Ben & Jerry announced a new flavor called “One Love” that pays homage to the legendary performer’s vision for the world. The new pints are filled with banana ice cream, caramel and cookie swirls and chocolatey peace signs. A portion of the proceeds from each pint will be donated to Jamaica’s One Love Youth Camp, an organization run by The Bob Marley Foundation and Partners for Youth Empowerment. The ice cream company is no newcomer to promoting social causes. Other flavors with a cause include “Empower Mint” for democracy, “Phish Food” for clean waterways, and “One Sweet World” for more inclusive communities. “One Love” was released last year in the U.K. and was successful enough to get the green light to head to the U.S. in time for summer…
