Citrus, pistachio, pomegranate salad

This time of year, the citrus brought in from across the southern states is at its peak. And wow, is it good. It’s the perfect balance between tart and sweet, and it helps brings a bright pop of color and flavor to those of us living under grey winter skies. An orange at anytime is a pretty good snack, but sometimes you want something a little more special, or something fun you can share. This unique citrus salad checks both those boxes. Make it as a side dish to dinner or prepare a platter for your next party. Either way, it will be a big hit, and it will most certainly be something different. * Feel free to mix up the citrus. The salad works great with anything from tangerines, blood oranges or even limes. Berry breakfast smoothie bowl brings a smart start to the day

It’s not too late to get in on the biggest breakfast trend of 2017. Smoothie bowls are exactly what they sound like — you create a smoothie and top it with pretty much whatever you would like. You don’t need perfectly sliced raw almonds or gorgeous exotic fruits. Any type of nut, fruit or even crunchy cereal make for great flavor and texture. Smoothie bowls are more satisfying than a regular smoothie, too, because you can’t just throw in back in a few seconds. You have to eat it like a real breakfast (there’s a spoon and chewing involved, yay!). There’s a reason why these beautiful bowls became so popular this year, and we’re definitely going to see more of them as people look for a healthy start to 2018. Here is one tasty smoothie bowl variety to get you started. Berry Breakfast Smoothie Bowl Serves 1 Ingredients  5 ounces Greek yogurt, plain…

Celebrate National Sangria Day, Wine not?

The holidays can be a stressful time of year, so it’s no coincidence National Sangria Day, December 20, 2017, falls right in the middle of them. Forget shopping, forgetting complicated cooking recipes, forget awkward family functions. Put some relaxation back into your month with a little sangria. A little splash of history The name sangria comes from the word sangre, or blood, and refers to the drink’s often dark color. The first sangrias were likely dark wine, watered down with mixes of water, wine, herbs and spices. Since water was often unfit for consumption because of bacteria, the ancient Romans probably added anything they could to help kill off the germs and disguise the taste of mediocre table wine. Thus, sangria was born. Though Spain and Portugal can claim its origins, today sangria is enjoyed all over the world. Whether you drink it on a patio in the summer to cool off, or…

Cranberry, spinach pinwheels make a perfect holiday appetizer

These cranberry tortilla pinwheel wraps are a perfect holiday appetizer. They’re just bursting with festive color. Red cranberries pop against the creamy white cheese and dark green spinach. The flavor is a perfect blend of sweet and savory, and they’re filling, too. If you need to feed a lot of people, these will help you get there. For a little crunch, try them with the addition of walnuts, too! Fresh Cranberry bars are a festive, tart treat

While Americans consume nearly 400 million pounds of cranberries every year, 20 percent of those are during Thanksgiving week alone. And the rest — nearly 2.3 pounds per person — are consumed almost entirely in the form of juice. Only five percent of the cranberry harvest is sold fresh. Someday, Americans will wake up and realize this nutritious, flavorful little fruit has so much more to offer than just sauce. Cranberries rise to the top of many healthy food lists. Besides being a great source of vitamin C, manganese, and fiber, cranberries contain phytonutrients, which are essential for overall health. This means that among other things, cranberries are great for reducing inflammation, reducing incidences of UTIs and ulcers, and protecting against cancer. Not to say that a dessert recipe with cranberries is somehow a health food. But if you’re going to eat dessert anyway, you might as well add a little of this…

Delightfully crispy apple cinnamon chips

Apple cinnamon chips take such little effort, I’m not entirely sure why I haven’t tried to make them before. I guess because I usually try to stay away from dehydrating foods. The thought of leaving my oven on for eight hours makes me (irrationally) nervous, but these take just about two hours. I can deal with that. And to maximize the oven’s energy, you can load up as many cookie sheets or baking dishes with apple slices as you can fit. I had a whole bag of apples left that were originally intended for more apple sauce, but I was feeling more creative than that. I washed and sliced up my mixed bag of apples, coated them with cinnamon and a hint of sugar, and popped them in the oven. These chips are a naturally healthy snack. For a completely guilt-free chip, leave off the sugar. Seriously. They’re tasty and sweet as-is. You’ll love them…

15 side dishes using cranberries that aren’t sauce

Some people don’t go crazy for cranberry sauce — I personally can’t understand it. But it got me wondering of other ways can we enjoy cranberries as a side dish beyond just sauce this season. They’re cheap, readily available and really healthy, so it would be a shame for anyone to overlook them completely. I got to work on Pinterest and put together this craveable list of all things cranberry. 8 Foods you can carve that aren’t pumpkins

Be original this year and forget about pumpkin carving. There are other fun foods you can turn into jack-o-lanterns just as easily. You could start with an unusual looking squash — one of those green and bumpy ones you see at the farmers market, or you could take it totally weird and think citrus. Here are eight creative carving ideas for Halloween. Apples Apples are another symbol for fall, so why not give them the jack-o-lantern treatment? Their firm flesh and thin skin make them a perfect candidate for going under the knife. If you plan on keeping them around for longer than a few hours, try spraying with a bit of lemon juice to keep from turning brown. Bonus points for turning your creation into the best fall apple of them all — candy apples. https://www.instagram.com/p/BMO8G07jQfy/?tagged=carvedapple Oranges A grapefruit spoon will help you tackle the delicate job of gutting an orange. Multi-state Salmonella outbreak linked to papayas sickens more than 200

A recent string of salmonella outbreaks may bring an early end to tropical summer fruit salads. Federal officials verified they have linked four separate salmonella outbreaks — totaling 215 illnesses — in recent months to papayas imported from Mexico. The outbreaks were reported from 26 different states. The majority of the outbreaks were initially concentrated in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and the South with New Jersey, Virginia and Texas reporting the highest number of instances. The salmonella scare has since spread to Arizona, Colorado and California. One Californian recently died, bringing the death toll to two. The other, a New Yorker, died after contracting salmonella in July. One California-based producer, Bravo Produce, issued a papaya recall after investigators traced bacteria to shipments from Tijuana. As standard procedure and in accordance with confidentiality laws, the FDA wouldn’t release the names if the retailers who sold the problematic produce. Instead, consumers are left to check their…
