Pineapple on pizza? Canadian man credited with inventing Hawaiian dies at 83

The Canadian man who is widely credited with inventing Hawaiian pizza, setting of the world-wide debate over whether the fruit has the right to top a pie, died last week at the age of 83. Sam Panopoulos was born in Greece and emigrated to Canada in 1954 at the age of 20. He told BBC that he made the first “Hawaiian” pizza in 1962 at the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, as a fun experiment. “We just put it on, just for the fun of it, see how it was going to taste,” Panopoulos told the BBC. “We were young in the business and we were doing a lot of experiments.” Panopoulos said he and his brothers liked the sweet and savory contrast between the ham and the pineapple, and that they named it “Hawaiian” after the brand of canned pineapple they used. Pineapple on pizza became a trending debate earlier this year when the…

Alton Brown’s Genius Meatball Baking Hack You’ll Want to Copy

If you consider the perfect meatball, you probably think a crispy exterior with a juicy interior, seasoned well and smothered in simmering tomato sauce. But until now, meatball bakers have typically tossed them on a sheet pan where they would simmer in their own grease and retain a bit too much of that sogginess. Food innovation is a marvelous thing. Television show host, chef and author Alton Brown took to Instagram to share with us his genius hack for solving this dilemma. He posted, “Thinking about the time I roasted my meatballs in an egg carton to wick away the grease. #crispyallover.” Fans responded in the comments with praise. Using Alton’s hack, the grease pools that usually form when baking meatballs are soaked up by the cardboard egg carton. This allows the meat to form a crispy exterior shell. (With grease-soaked paper in the oven, be sure to keep a careful watch!) Recipe…

Galaxy bagel is out of this world

From the folks who brought us the Rainbow Bagel, get ready for the otherworldly experience of the Galaxy Bagel. The Bagel Store, located in Brooklyn, NY, achieved internet fame last year with its swirled, brightly colored bread smeared with cream cheese and funfetti filling. But refusing to go quietly into the night, the store is back on the trending food scene with this gorgeous intergalactic-inspired breakfast treat. The Galaxy Bagels boast a beautiful night sky color scheme of black, turquoise and magenta and are topped with what appears to be glittery, edible sugar crystals. If that isn’t enticing enough, the bagels are  also filled with Moon Rock Cream Cheese — and by moon rocks, they mean big chunks of delicious Oreo cookies. Perfection. No word yet on taste, but for an ultimate in Instagram food photography, jet over to New York for your own Galaxy Bagel. Introducing The Galaxy Bagels with Moon Rock Cream Cheese!…

A restaurant totally devoted to Nutella is opening next week

All of your chocolatey dreams have come true. The world’s first Nutella cafe is opening in Chicago on May 31. Although other eateries may offer menus focusing on the rich, hazelnut spread, the Nutella Cafe is the first restaurant owned by Ferrero USA, so the entire restaurant experience is designed around the beloved brand. From the creamy color of the walls, to the hazelnut-shaped hanging lights, everything is inspired by Nutella. “It’s designed to make you feel like you’re actually walking into a jar of Nutella,” said Angela Baird, the director of operations at BIG Retail, who gave design consultation to Ferrero USA, told The Chicago Tribune. “Everything screams Nutella.” There are, of course, no shortage of Nutella menu items. Satisfy any craving with a Nutella filled croissant, waffles served with warm apples Nutella drizzle and toasted hazelnuts, or steel-cut oats topped with mixed berries, almond milk and, what else, Nutella.…

A look at the growing artisanal salt trend

A half dozen salts sparkle in the sunlight at a stand in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. They vary wildly in texture, size, color, shape, and, of course, taste. The artisan salt trend has taken off in recent years, and with it, a deeper appreciation for the common mineral. Culinary creators are no longer limited to the taste of table salt, and health conscious consumers committed to the “farm to table” lifestyle have taken to them as a healthier alternative. Still, salt gets a bad rap among most. We’re told by doctors to avoid ingesting extra salt at all cost. But Kimarie Santiago wants to shake up that idea. The Long Valley, New Jersey woman is, of course, biased. She owns the growing artisan salt empire, Saltopia, but her passion for preaching salt’s health benefits, is infectious. And, she backs her bias with science. “I’ve dedicated my life to having my two…

Pippa Middleton’s restrictive and risky pre-wedding diet

What does a British socialite and sister to the Duchess of Cambridge eat to drop pounds just days before her wedding? In less than one month, Pippa Middleton will marry James Matthews, chief executive of Eden Rock Capital Management Group, which has offices in London. The world has been watching Pippa since 2011 when she walked into Westminster Abbey lifting the train of Kate Middleton’s royal wedding dress. While it was her backside that had us wondering what she ate then, with impending nuptials of her own, we wonder what she may be doing now to get in even better shape — if that’s possible. Elle reported that Pippa was photographed leaving a fancy fitness center in London, on Wednesday after taking a 75-minute pilates class. Elle also gave details of Pippa’s pre-wedding diet — something most of us have never heard of — The Sirtfood Diet. The strict diet includes 20 specific foods,…
