France’s Wine Theme Park is like Disney for Adults

Anaheim, California may have Disneyland, but the happiest place on Earth is actually located in France. La Cité du Vin, or “The City of Wine,” is located in Bordeaux — one of France’s most storied wine regions. While it may not have whizzing go-around rides and 20-ft tower drops, the two-year-old theme park-museum-hybrid has plenty of thrills for oenophiles. Visitors can start at La Cité du Vin’s on premise restaurant where more than 800 varieties of wine from 70 different countries are stored — all of which are available for tasting and ordering. Guests can then also explore more than 20 wine themed exhibits and sections of the park, including an immersive simulated boat ride that shows what it’s like to be a globe-trotting wine merchant. Meet the world’s first Milk Sommelier

At a time when Millennials are taking food to to ridiculous heights — drinking perfect latte art out of an avocado, anyone? — it’s easy to see how the job of a Milk Sommelier can actually exists. Bas de Groot is the world’s one and only milk sommelier as far as he’s aware. You might mock it, but he does actually has some smart things to say about the world’s favorite white dairy drink. “It’s a liquid of serious complexity akin to a fine wine,” Groot says in a mini-doc by CNN’s Great Big Story. “The main thing I do is tell the story of the rich diversity of milk.” Groot hosts an on-screen tasting at Clover Dairy Farm in California with farmer John Bucher. Should grocery stores staff sommeliers?

No longer happy simply guzzling wine with friends on Friday night, now the social set wants to know a little bit about it, too. Grocery stores seem happy to cater to our knowledge cravings because they know it will boost sales. Across the US, grocery stores are expanding their wine selections. Driven by consumer demand and a number of states loosening their liquor laws, some grocers are seeking the services of sommeliers, or wine stewards, to help customers make a selection. One advantage to having sommeliers on staff at a grocery is that they can answer questions, make recommendations and even help customers pair wines with the ingredients in their shopping carts, says Elliot Begoun, principal of The Intertwine Group, a practice focused on emerging food and beverage brands. “Many shoppers are overwhelmed by the choices on store shelves and may just choose not to buy wine if they can’t narrow it down,” he says.…
