The snacks Martha Stewart never travels without

There are some foods that should not be packed for the office, a plane, or any public space. Tuna fish, hard-boiled eggs, smelly cheese — anything that is going to be offensive to other people in proximity to you. But when you’re Martha Stewart, you can do whatever you want. Stewart recently spoke to the New York Times and shared that her go-to travel snack is none other than hard-boiled eggs. “My hard-boiled eggs are just so much better than any eggs on the plane,” Stewart said. “They’re from my own chickens. I take them for everybody I’m traveling with.” (Okay, it’s nice she shares.) For longer flights she says she might make “a delicious smoked salmon sandwich on seven-grain bread” or tabbouleh salad. Other Stewart-approved plane snacks include homemade yogurt with apple sauce. Basically, she comes prepared for any kind of hunger pang so she doesn’t have to eat what…

Office workers consume a shocking number of extra calories in snacks every year

Glazed donuts, pretzels, salted peanuts. What is it about a 9-5 desk job that makes you want to eat all the darn time? You barely finish breakfast before your stomach is rumbling for a mid-morning snack or lunch. And let’s not even talk about those late afternoon hunger pangs. Whether it’s boredom or temptation that has you giving in to the slice of cake, the calories consumed present a huge cause for concern. According to a recent survey by Dutch food brand Kallø, all of those extra calories add up to a shocking 100,000 extra calories every year for the average woman. Your eyes probably just popped a little bit, and you might have even put down that potato chip — and that’s a good thing. All those extra calories are, of course, seriously adding to your waistline. 100,000 calories is the equivalent to eating 193 double cheeseburgers or 502 bars of chocolate. If you go…

Here’s a fun way to use your roasted red pepper hummus. It’s a great after school snack for kids, or a great appetizer for game day. Serve it with your favorite ranch dressing or a healthier Greek yogurt version. The great part, you can include whatever veggies you have on hand, and it’s sure to still taste delicious. After all, hummus is good for making everything taste amazing. Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Pinwheels Yields 36 rolls/ Serves 4 Ingredients 4 large tortilla wraps (I used spinach flavor) 8 tbsp roasted red pepper hummus 8 thin slices of your favorite cheese (I used colby jack) 8 oz. of turkey, thinly sliced 1 cup roasted red pepper slices 1/2 cup canned mushrooms Directions Lay out the tortillas and spread 2 tbsp hummus over each wrap. Pumpkin Spice White Chocolate Chip Cookies

Sometimes store bought cookies look so good that you can’t pass them up. I bought a dozen pumpkin spice white chocolate chip cookies the other day. They were so tempting, I had to have one in the car before I even made it home. But that’s where the excitement ended. The cookies barely had any spice flavoring to them, and they were greasy on the bottom. Not even milk could make it right. So, I set out to make a better version on my own. Try this recipe if you like your pumpkin spice cookies to have tons of cinnamon and clove flavor along side the smooth white chocolate, and just say “no” to bad store bought pumpkin spice cookies. Pumpkin Spice White Chocolate Chip Cookies Makes about 3 dozen small cookies, or 18 large cookies Ingredients 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour 1 cup canned pumpkin 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips 1…

Kind Bar dumps 45,000 pounds of sugar in Times Square to show childhood health trend

KIND snack company is shedding light on just how much extra sugar children consume, by creating a 45,485 pound pile of sugar in Times Square. The 45,485 pounds represent the amount of sugar American children consume every 5 minutes. The American Heart Association recommends children eat or drink less than six teaspoons of added sugars per day. Six teaspoons of added sugar amounts to about 100 extra calories, or 25 grams, per day. But the average amount is nearly triple this recommendation. Many children consume more than 270 calories from added sugars each day according to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Much of this comes from fruity beverages and soft drinks. Artificial sweeteners aren’t without consequence either. “Hopefully it empowers consumers — especially parents — to make informed food choices,” Stephanie Perruzza, RD & Wellness Specialist at KIND told USA Today. Eating foods high in sugar during childhood has been linked to the…

Americans are salty with their snacking habits

America has become a country of snackers. Between working long hours and eating on the run, it’s no wonder Americans spend more on snack foods than they do on actual meals. According to new Nielsen data, snacking is popular in every corner of the country, but gender, generation, income and geography can shape some of your preferences. Salty snacks still reign supreme, with chips, popcorn and meat snacks generating more than $27 billion for retailers. Candy comes in a close second with $20 billion in sales, followed by cheese snacks generating more than $17 billion in sales. Cookies sales top $7 billion. Crackers ($6.65 billion), ice cream ($6.63 billion) and nuts ($6.17 billion) also rank among America’s favorites. In a recent Harris Poll EquiTrend study, released by Nielsen, U.S. consumers identified the snacks they use to commonly curb cravings out of 275 common snacking brands. While candy and chocolate ranked high regardless of region, some snacks did better in…

It’s good for our tastebuds if we mix things up every so often. Try this roasted red pepper sauce on anything you would typically top with a tomato sauce for an instant, restaurant-worthy upgrade. It’s a unique flavor all on its own, and it will give new life to those dishes you’ve made dozens or even hundreds of times before. It looks like tomato sauce, but the creamy, fiery flavor will surely make you a fan. Roasted Red Pepper Sauce Ingredients 16 oz. jar of roasted red peppers 2 tbsp water 2.5 tbsp butter 3-4 cloves of garlic 1 tbsp dried basil 1 tbsp dried oregano 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional) healthy dose of fresh cracked pepper 1/3 cup heavy cream (if using on pizza, use 1/4 or less) Directions Add peppers to blender along with 1-2 tbsp of extra liquid from the jar they came in. It’s a bit acidic, but can…

Creamy Roasted Beet Hummus: Your new favorite snack

Hummus has taken hold over most of America. Just a few years ago, most people had never heard of the traditional Mediterranean dip. Today, we can’t get enough of this creamy snack spread made from chickpeas, sesame seed paste and seasonings. Millennials, in particular, tend to gravitate toward new and unusual flavors. A new generation paired with a strong commitment to healthier dietary choices paved the way for the unusual light brown spread that packed a nutritional punch. Americans have been so receptive of hummus, in fact, that sales have started to creep towards those of other popular dips like salsa and guacamole. According to the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council, hummus sales in grocery stores now top $725 million annually — up from $5 just 20 years ago. It is estimated that one in four homes now regularly stock hummus in the fridge. Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, have been cultivated in Middle…

20 Snack Foods You Didn’t Know Were Vegan

Just because you’re vegan, doesn’t mean you can’t indulge. More people are attempting vegan lifestyles than ever before. Living the vegan way means no dairy, eggs, meat, honey, leather or anything that’s a byproduct of animals, but the number of vegan products and substitutes is on the rise, making the switch easier than ever. But just because you’re vegan doesn’t mean you have to get excited over celery sticks when your friends are savoring Sour Patch Kids. Life would be way less fun if you could never share in snacking with friends or family. Here are a handful of acceptable vegan treats — only because they’re animal-friendly (definitely no health claims here). These foods are almost certainly vegan on accident, but that doesn’t mean they don’t count! 1.
