If you love coffee, you probably can’t think of a bad time for a cup of Joe, but a new study shows that there is, in fact, a best time to drink it if alertness is what you’re going for. Researchers from the U.S. Army developed an algorithm that can make personal recommendations for the timing your morning cup with the goal of drinking the least amount of coffee while achieving optimal alertness, reports LiveScience.  By using the algorithm, researchers found that they could improve people’s performance on attention-based tasks by up to 64 percent even though participants were drinking the same amount of caffeine as usual. The study found that people could reduce their coffee consumption by up to 65 percent without losing any of the effects of the caffeine. The algorithm takes into account factors like a person’s sleep schedule, sleep deprivation, schedule, and alertness at different times during the day. A…

Make the original Irish Coffee this St. Patrick’s Day

If you’re not into St. Patrick’s Day festivities that require guzzling green, cheap American beer, perhaps you’ll consider sipping a beverage that is actually Irish in origin. Irish coffee is a warm, creamy cocktail invented in Ireland in the 1940s. Unlike many drinks thrown together from excess ingredients, the Irish coffee was created with a purpose. Joe Sheridan was the head chef at the restaurant and coffee shop in the Foynes Airbase Flying boat terminal building in County Limerick, Ireland.  When a group of group of weary American passengers disembarked in Foynes after a long, failed flight, canceled mid-air due to poor weather conditions, Sheridan whipped up the drink and served it to them to keep them warm. Legend has it that after he was asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridan replied that it was Irish coffee. The beverage caught on. In 1945 when transatlantic flights began to land at the nearby Shannon airport, Irish coffee…

8 ways to recycle used coffee grounds

Cream, sugar, black or with a splash of Bailey’s? It doesn’t matter how you take your coffee, as long as you know where those grinds are going. The average American drinks about 3.1 cups of coffee per day — that’s 66 billion cups per year when you include all of the espresso, cappuccino, lattes and iced coffees consumed. Instead of throwing all those leftover grounds in the trash, consider some other practical uses. From increasing growth in your garden, to fixing furniture, there are some interesting ways to recycle this common coffee byproduct. 1. Make Fertilizer. Coffee wakes you up in the morning, and it can do the same for your plants, too. Used coffee grinds still contain tons of nutrients beneficial to soil. To use coffee grinds as fertilizer, grab some grounds or some leftover pucks from your local coffee shop, and work it into the soil around your plants. 2.…

‘Central Perk’ coffee shops could be headed our way

Friends fans, listen up. All these years dreaming about hanging out with your five best buds at a cozy coffee shop might just turn into a reality. While Rachel won’t be there to serve you and Phoebe won’t be singing “Smelly Cat” on stage (definitely for the best), a Central Perk themed café could be coming to a town near you. While there is no official word yet, reportedly earlier this month, Warner Bros. Entertainment, who owns the rights to the successful ’90s television show, trademarked the use of the Central Perk name. According to celebrity-gossip site The Blast, Warner Bros. trademarked the name “Central Perk” as well as the logo for potential use for “coffee shop and cafe services.” The entertainment company also reported filed for exclusive rights to the name for products such as toys, board games and slot machines. Simply trademarking a name doesn’t mean franchised coffee cafés are…
