But peppermint is so last year. Improve upon this tradition with one of these new exciting tastes in town. Here are 10 usual candy can flavors you can start nibbling on now. Gravy They taste like they were just poured out of Grandma’s gravy boat. They might not make your breath smell minty-fresh, but you’ll probably enjoy them a lot more. Pickle Be careful before biting into these candy canes. If you’re expecting the green color to mean spearmint or apple, you’ll be in for a savory surprise. These pickle candy canes taste like the real dill. Rotisserie Chicken Some might say that meat and candy don’t mix, but you can be the judge of that. Watch your black licorice intake, FDA warns

This week as you’re snacking on Reese’s cups and Snickers in a post-Halloween candy coma, remember there is one candy you really can overdose on — black licorice. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) encourages people to remember during this candy-centric time of year, that if you enjoy snacking on this old-fashioned favorite, to do it in moderation, particularly if you are over 40. FDA experts say glycyrrhizin, a sweetening compound found in black licorice that can cause potassium levels to fall in the body. With low potassium levels, some people will experience lethargy, abnormal heart rhythms or even congestive heart failure. If you’re a fan of back licorice, the FDA offers advice: No matter your age, don’t eat copious amounts of black licorice at a time. If you develop any of the symptoms listed above such as an irregular heartbeat or muscle weakness, stop eating the black licorice immediately…

What common cravings can say about your health

Cravings can serve as a window to what’s going on in your body. Before you indulge, stop and consider what it is that’s actually going on inside. Sometimes our cravings serve a purpose. They can tell us we’re lacking in a certain vitamin or mineral. But they can also tell us we’re eating too much of something and our bodies are just trying to get their fix, like an addiction. So how can we tell which cravings we should give into? Alissa Ramsey MS, RD told Marie Claire what each craving could actually mean. Pasta Who doesn’t love a big bowl of comfort food? But a craving for pasta could mean that you’re not eating enough protein or fat. Without these essential compounds, blood sugar levels fluctuate causing you to crave even more carbs. Simple carbs like pasta are treated in the same way as sugar once they are digested, said Ramsey, so you’ll keep craving…

Most popular Halloween candy in each state

Americans will spend $2.7 billion on Halloween candy this year, as estimated by the National Retail Federation. But what sweet treats you get in your loot bag will largely depend on where you live. Online bulk candy retailer Candystore.com combed through 10 years (2007-2016) of sales data to tell us what the best sellers in every state are in the weeks leading up to Halloween. They created this interactive map to show you the most popular candies, by sales, in each state — actually the top three. This map, of course, is limited to online candy sales, but it gives us a peek into what Halloween candy is popular where. It’s no surprise that Hershey’s M&M’s are popular in their home state of Pennsylvania, but most others seem pretty random. So, how does your state hold up? Judging by this map, you might be inclined to pack up the car and go treat-or-treat in a neighboring…

The unhealthiest Halloween candies

Halloween may be mostly for kids, but the calorie count of the candy-centric holiday affects everyone. The American Heart Association says that an adult woman shouldn’t have more than 25 grams of sugar per day; for men, it’s 37.5 grams. Many of the most popular candies of the season pack a huge amount of this sugar in just one or two fun-sized servings. The worst part is that sometimes we snack on these small sizes without much thought. Here are a few of the worst offenders: Reese’s Minis Per 3 pieces: 108 calories, 6.4 grams fat (2.2 grams saturated), 9.9 grams sugar One serving, or 9 Reese’s minis, packs half of your maximum daily about of sugar and tons of fat into just a few small bites. Hershey’s Take 5 Per snack-sized candy bar: 100 calories, 5 grams fat (2.5 grams saturated), 9 grams sugar The ingredients sound simple enough — chocolate, pretzels, peanut butter,…

Americans are salty with their snacking habits

America has become a country of snackers. Between working long hours and eating on the run, it’s no wonder Americans spend more on snack foods than they do on actual meals. According to new Nielsen data, snacking is popular in every corner of the country, but gender, generation, income and geography can shape some of your preferences. Salty snacks still reign supreme, with chips, popcorn and meat snacks generating more than $27 billion for retailers. Candy comes in a close second with $20 billion in sales, followed by cheese snacks generating more than $17 billion in sales. Cookies sales top $7 billion. Crackers ($6.65 billion), ice cream ($6.63 billion) and nuts ($6.17 billion) also rank among America’s favorites. In a recent Harris Poll EquiTrend study, released by Nielsen, U.S. consumers identified the snacks they use to commonly curb cravings out of 275 common snacking brands. While candy and chocolate ranked high regardless of region, some snacks did better in…

Your favorite candy bars will have less calories by 2022

Candy companies are responding to consumer cries for healthier foods and smaller portion sizes. More than a dozen candy companies including Mars, Nestle, Ferrara, Lindt & Sprungli and Ferrero Rocher, promised the Partnership for a Healthier America, a foundation chaired by former first lady Michelle Obama, to reduce the size of 50 percent of their products to less than 200 calories by 2022, reported The Washington Post. As part of the initiative, the companies also agreed to include front-of-package nutrition information for no less than 90 percent of their products. “It’s a big commitment, and a big shift,” John Downs, chief executive of the National Confectioners Association told The Washington Post. But, he added, “obviously there’s an important and ongoing conversation around sugar in the U.S., and around the world … and our industry has been discussing how we can be a productive part of that conversation.” About 30 percent of American candies have already…
