What’s actually in wasabi anyway? Doesn’t soy sauce contain fish or something? When it comes to common condiments, sometimes their specific ingredients are a mystery to us. After 116 years in captivity, Barnum’s animal crackers have been set free. The mighty animals depicted on the bright red and yellow box have always been shown locked behind the bars of a circus boxcar. But a spokesperson for Mondelez International, Nabisco’s parent company, said it was time for a change. “To continue to make the brand relevant for years to come, we felt this was the right time for the next evolution in our design, now showing the animals in a natural habitat,” said Mondelez’s Kimberly Fontes. The new design shows five animals walking shoulder to shoulder on the savanna. The new packaging also reads, “NEW LOOK. Same Great Taste,” as reassurance the classic cookie taste on the inside has remained the same. Beginning with an April 2016 letter, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals urged Nabisco to make the change to its advertising and packaging, as public…

If all goes well for one American company, you’ll, at least, have the choice in just a few years. Cultured meat producer Memphis Meats announced yesterday that it has successfully created the world’s first lineup of “clean poultry”, which included pieces of duck and chicken — and not one animal death was required. “It’s thrilling to introduce the first chicken and duck that didn’t require raising animals. This is a historic moment for the clean meat movement,” said Uma Valeti, M.D., co-founder and CEO of Memphis Meats. Memphis Meats and a few other cultured meat producers around the world, are trying to reinvent modern animal agriculture. Valeti said the cultured meat system uses just 10 percent of the land and…
