The most popular diets of 2018

Research has shown us that adopting a daily healthy lifestyle and routine is the best way to shed pounds and keep them off. But that doesn’t stop us from looking for the latest strategy for losing weight in a hurry. Google has published its list of the Top 10 Most Searched Diets of 2018. This year, diets fell largely in two categories — those that skip or cut carbs, or those that restrict eating to certain hours or days of the week. Google receives more than 90 percent of the world’s searches, so the search engine’s list is probably a decent gauge of what people were actually interested in a trying out this year, or at the very least, which diets have grown tremendously in popularity from 2017 to 2018. This is why you’ve never eaten a fresh olive

Olives are fruits that grow on trees, but have you ever wondered why you’ve never seen a fresh olive in the produce section of your grocery store? And did you know that those black olives sitting atop your pizza slice probably started in groves as green olives? As part of the series Reactions, The American Chemical Society and PBS Digital Studios produced a video that touches on the history of eating olives — it’s actually pretty recent — as well as the three chemical processes that make olives lose the terrible tasting compound, oleurpein, that prevents us from eating them fresh. Check this out to learn more about the three chemical methods producers can use on the fruit of the Olea Europaea to bring us the salty little snacks we know and love.  Why can’t you buy fresh olives? https://youtu.be/oStoeHntfG8 Also see, VIDEO: How to build the perfect charcuterie tray. Creamy Roasted Beet Hummus: Your new favorite snack

Hummus has taken hold over most of America. Just a few years ago, most people had never heard of the traditional Mediterranean dip. Today, we can’t get enough of this creamy snack spread made from chickpeas, sesame seed paste and seasonings. Millennials, in particular, tend to gravitate toward new and unusual flavors. A new generation paired with a strong commitment to healthier dietary choices paved the way for the unusual light brown spread that packed a nutritional punch. Americans have been so receptive of hummus, in fact, that sales have started to creep towards those of other popular dips like salsa and guacamole. According to the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council, hummus sales in grocery stores now top $725 million annually — up from $5 just 20 years ago. It is estimated that one in four homes now regularly stock hummus in the fridge. Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, have been cultivated in Middle…
