U.S. Postal Service unveils first-ever scratch-and-sniff stamps

Sending a letter just got a whole lot sweeter. Now, when you send a note home to Mom, she can get a whiff of happy summer scents with the U.S. Postal Service’s first-ever scratch-and-sniff stamp sheets. The new “Frozen Treats Forever” collection features fun and colorful popsicles with sweet summer smells including kiwi, blue better, strawberry and watermelon alongside other ice cream truck favorites like chocolate, root beer and cola ice cream. The Postal Service says these stamps will “add the sweet scent of summer to letters of love, friendship, party invitations, and other mailings.” The collection was designed by Virginia-based artists Antonio Alcalá and Leslie Badani, and watercolored by California artist Margaret Berg. Each adorable scented-sticker features two frosty treats and will always be worth the current price of a 1-ounce first-class letter, like all stamps labeled “Forever.” A book of 20 stamps can be purchased for $10 at USPS.com and will become…

Coffee art done Disney style

Coffee art has become a bit of a trend recently with artists everywhere showing off their stuff on frothy, foamy canvases. Baristas often go with the basic swan or simple swirl, but others are taking it over-the-top by dazzling us with fan favorite Disney cartoon characters. These lattes may have been designed with kids’ movies in mind, but they’re so fun, Disney-loving adults will definitely want to keep them all to themselves. From the Little Mermaid to Nemo, they’re so pretty you would hate to take that first sip and ruin it — but caffeines craving can only wait so long. Drink up! Saluting food works of art by Warhol on the 30th anniversary of his death

Andy Warhol died at the age of 58 on this date, 30 years ago. He was known for living life at a frenetic pace as much as he was for his art. His eclectic portfolio include celebrity silkscreens of Marilyn Monroe, the Mona Lisa and John Wayne. While he was known primarily for his celebrity images, Warhol’s most famous contribution to the art world was, arguably, Campbell’s Soup I: Tomato, 1968. The painting is one of the most widely celebrated works of art ever created, but there is still plenty you might not know about the image series. He dabbled in food a few other times, but most of his food works we know today come from a little-known cookbook, which Warhol illustrated for friend Suzie Frankfurt in the spring of 1959. The pair sought to mock the fashionable, French cuisine cookbooks that were popular at the time. Only 34 full-color books were produced at the time.…

Ent-icing dessert designs by local cake artist

Cathy Burnheimer is turning the cake world upside-down. Her innovative cake designs push the boundaries and defy gravity. “We’ve done chandelier cakes that have hung inverted,” said Cathy Burnheimer. “One was at the Omni William Penn for a wedding. It was a five-tier cake that hung from the chandelier.” The Omni William Penn is a 23-floor hotel located in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The grand hotel has been host to many visiting luminaries including John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama, Mick Jagger and Ewan McGregor—just to name a few. Brides and grooms and other “high society” events regularly rent the famous balconied Grand Ballroom. The hotel was designed in a Renaissance Revival style—which means ornate, Classical details everywhere and tall, interior arches. Impressively decorated ceilings and cornices set the scene for a formal affair. (If you’re lucky enough to visit, be sure to look up!) “To have the Omni as my inspiration…
