Chocolate can make a bad day better. So how rough of a day would you need to have to splurge on the world’s most expensive piece of Chocolat?

Portuguese chocolatier Daniel Gomes crafted a piece that retails for just $9,489. It went on display Friday in Portugal.

The reason it’s so expensive is because of the ingredients. The filling includes gold flakes, saffron threads, white truffle and vanilla from Madagascar. Oh yeah, and it’s covered in edible gold.

Did we mention it’s diamond shaped and its crown-shaped box is covered with 5,500 Swarovksi crystals?

World’s priciest chocolate goes on display in Portugal

LISBON (Reuters) – The world’s most expensive chocolate went on display at a chocolate fair in Obidos in Portugal on Friday. Priced at 7,728 euros ($9,489) and covered in edible gold, the chocolate is part of a limited edition of 1,000 bonbons. It has a filling of saffron threads, white truffle, vanilla from Madagascar and gold flakes.

The previous record, set by artisan chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt of Denmark, seems like a relative bargain at only $250 apiece. Here’s how Guinness described it:

“The chocolate, called La Madeline au Truffe, comprises a rare French Perigord truffle surrounded by ganache of heavy cream, sugar, truffle oil and vanilla coated in 70% Valrhona dark chocolate and rolled in fine cocoa powder.”

The bag of M&Ms in the vending machine sounds like a better deal at $1, doesn’t it?
