5 weird and wonderful kitchen gadgets you need right now

The kitchen basics are pretty easy to cover. If you have your pots, your pans, and a few mixing bowls,  you can whip up pretty much anything you want in some form. But there are many less-traditional tools that make cooking faster and way more fun. It’s time to explore more than just your standard spoons and spatulas and find new solutions that can fix common cooking annoyances. Here are our 10 favorite kitchen gadgets that are worth a glance: 1. A Guacamole Bowl The problem: Your guac turns brown within a few hours. The solution: The Fresh Guacamole Keeper keeps your guac fresh and green for days. No, really! The lid presses down on top of the avocado, pushing out the air, and creating a seal on top. That brown layer never has a chance to form. Where to buy it: Guac Bowl, $12.99. 2. Pineapple Corer The problem: Preparing…

The is what the color of your bread bag twist tie means

Think of all of the sandwiches you have made in your lifetime — for yourself, for your kids, for road trips and lunches and late night snacks. Have you ever once stopped to notice that the color of the twist tie on your sandwich bread bag varies — or why that is? It turns out, bread bags aren’t just randomly wrapped up with whatever colored twist tie is available. Those little pieces of wire wrapped in paper (or the hard plastic U-shaped square tags) are, in fact, used as an indicator of just how fresh your bread will be. It’s a hidden little behind-the-scenes secret at grocery stores. While you use the ‘expiration’ or ‘sell by’ date, employees restocking shelves can quickly look at a loaf and recognize the color code. Here’s how to know when you’re bread was baked: Monday: Blue Tuesday: Green Thursday: Red Friday: White Saturday: Yellow Wednesday…

Grilled artichoke spinach panini recipe

Whether served warm or cold, at the table or at the tailgate, spinach artichoke dip is always a hit. It’s always been one of my favorite appetizers, so I decided to try to make it officially into a meal. I had delicious success turning it into a loaf, so I thought, why not a sandwich! This recipe is bursting with delicious smokey grilled artichoke hearts, spinach and lots of gooey cheese, all piled high on toasty garlic bread — because garlic bread makes everything better. I used a panini press because it’s easier, but you can use a griddle or even a heavy pan on top of your sandwich to help give it a good squish as it’s cooking. Try this super tasty recipe for spinach and artichoke panini for lunch or dinner today. Grilled artichoke spinach panini Ingredients 8 slices of sourdough bread 1/4 cup butter 1 tsp garlic…

Turkey and cheese, pesto panini recipe

If you’re a bit of a food cheapskate like me, you probably skip right over panini on a menu. They’re undeniably delicious, but they’re outrageously priced — $17 for a warmed deli-meat sandwich?! You can make the exact same sandwiches at home — no exaggeration. You might spend the same amount on ingredients, but you’ll be able to make enough sandwiches to feed your whole family, or yourself for a week. Try this recipe for a warm, cheesy turkey and cheese panini with pesto. The pesto mayo and fresh baked bread make it taste like it came from one of those overpriced fancy sandwich shops, but you’ll be eater fresher and healthier, and of course, saving yourself some cash in the process. Turkey and cheese, pesto panini Ingredients 2 tbsp light mayonnaise 4 tsp basil pesto 4 slices of bakery bread, thin sliced (Sourdough is my favorite for this recipe)…

Why you should be burning soy candles instead of your ordinary candles

At any holiday dinner gathering you can usually find smiling faces, delicious food, and a festive table glowing with gorgeous candlelight. But most people are in the dark about what those common paraffin wax candles are made of. Companies are not required to list candle ingredients (comparable to food and drink manufacturers), so most people never consider their contents. But by lighting that wick, you are letting the candle release waste products into your home environment, and ultimately into your body. Soy candles contain vegetable oil (soybeans) and essential oils, while paraffin wax is made with petroleum oil and chemical fragrances. According to a study at South Carolina State University, paraffin wax candles — the most popular kind of candles — emit toxic chemicals like toluene and benzene, while soybean candles did not. Here are 8 reasons why soy candles are a better choice for your holiday dinner party and every day after. Soy…

KFC knows you needed drumstick socks, launches online retail store

When you go to sleep at night, don’t you wish you could cuddle up with the Colonel? Now you can. KFC just launched a retail store of “finger lickin’ good” apparel and home décor. From  pillowcases printed with Sanders’ face to socks stamped with drumsticks, fast-food fans will find the items quite amusing. The fried-chicken swag starts at $8 for a pair of socks to $20 for an over-sized chicken sandwich lapel pin. A framed 11″x14″ print of KFC’s famous mashed potatoes is priced at $80. “Our fans were craving a way to embrace the fried chicken lifestyle, and KFC Ltd. gives them the opportunity to let their colonel flag fly,” said Steve Kelly, KFC U.S. director of media and digital, in a statement. Perhaps the most unusual item on the new site is a meteorite cut to look like the Zinger check sandwich. Retailing for $20,000, the item is said to be a…

Modern coffee table perfect for mancaves, connected lifestyles

If you have ever thought that your living room coffee table should be contributing more to your happiness, then you’ll jump at the chance to get in early on the new coffee table prototype currently raising funds on Indigogo. The Sobro is a coffee table designed with your connected lifestyle in mind. Sure, you likely already have charging ports, a refrigerator, bluetooth speakers and LED lights at your home, but isn’t America about innovation? Meat, bread and cheese existed already, but it took a California entrepreneur to see that the world needed a cheeseburger. The Sobro brings all of these features together in one place — meaning you never have to get up. The most prominent feature is probably the refrigerator drawer that keeps beverages and food chilled — and always in reach. Despite the bachelor pad design, the look is surprisingly sleek and could work in rooms…

Your Guests will Love this Beauty and the Beast themed pot

If only we could all have a meal as magical as the one Lumiere and Mrs. Potts prepare for Belle. In arguably the most iconic scene from Beauty and the Beast, the gracious host and hostess ask Belle to “put their service to the test” as dozens of dishes, cups and spoons dance around the dining room. That day at Beast’s Castle, the service actually could have been better if they had a few of the new Beauty and the Beast special edition Le Creuset brand pots to warm their soups, stews and sauces. Unfortunately for them, the pots weren’t around then and will only be available for a limited time beginning March 7. The Beauty and the Beast soup pot ($280) was created by Williams Sonoma and Le  Creuset in anticipation of the live-action film by the same name coming this month. The cobalt-blue, cast-iron pots have an embellished lid with a hand-applied rose and vine…

KitchenAid just whipped up a new limited-edition monochromatic mixer for 2017

If bridal showers and cooking shows are any indication, the KitchenAid stand mixer has remained the most popular piece of equipment in the kitchen for decades. It’s durability and mixing power have helped the top-tier mixer maintain it’s status since the 1930s. But you don’t need to be an aspiring chef to appreciate the company’s bright and bold color palettes. It’s also a well-known fact that these glossy appliances look gorgeous just sitting on a countertop. From empire red to tangerine to cobalt, there’s a color for any kitchen—85 available colors and finishes, actually. But just when you thought you had your perfect color picked out for your dream kitchen, the KitchenAid company announced last week it would be released a limited edition all-black style—not the shiny, licorice black already available. This new black mixer makes that black mixer look like rainbows and sunshine. The Artisian Black Tie 5-Quart Stand Mixer in mostly matte…
