Panera to offer a more plant-based menu in 2020

Whether it’s animal welfare concerns, climate change, nutrition, or just preference, it seems everyone nowadays has a reason for eating less meat. In response to the cultural shift, Panera is the latest restaurant chain to announce it would introduce more plant-based offerings to its menu. In fact, the popular quick-service restaurant and bakery said it plans to have half of its menu be plant-based within the next few years. Consumers can expect to see a new plant-based item added in every category by 2021. Panera’s bakery-café is also onboard with the switch-up. While 25 percent of its menu is already plant-based, the offerings will increase to make up at least half of the entire menu by 2021. Other fast food chains have responded to consumer demand by offering meat-like substitutes from Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, but Panera will dish out more plant-based whole foods like quinoa and edamame. They’ve become the go-to dairy for vegans, those suffering from lactose intolerance, and even for those just looking to reduce their intake of animal products. But, if it’s the healthiest dairy option you’re looking for, don’t just assume it will come from a plant. A new study found that many nondairy drinkers automatically assume their non-dairy milk choice is healthier than cow’s milk. And that may not be the case. What you can order that’s vegan-friendly at McDonald’s

Burger King is getting vegan love because of its Impossible Whopper. Taco Bell has a long list of vegan offerings. Even Chick-fil-A has delicious options for vegans in a pinch. But what about the most ubiquitous fast food chain of them all. What can vegans eat at McDonald’s? The storied restaurant chain best know for its burgers and chicken nuggets doesn’t exactly seem like a place that veggie-lovers would enjoy. Unfortunately, they’re mostly right. It is true that McDonalds doesn’t offer any vegan-certified items, and it’s also true that a lot of the foods you might mistake as vegan actually aren’t. The famously tasty french fries and hashbrowns include “natural beef flavor” made from milk derivates. Even the smoothies contain kosher gelatin. Still, if you’re a vegan who isn’t afraid of a low risk of a little cross-contamination with meat items, there are a few mostly safe menu items you…
