National Pizza Day: A Slice of Shared Italian-American History

(Originally published Feb. 8, 2017 for National Pizza Day) This year you will likely eat about 23 pounds of pizza. And you’re not alone in your cheese-laden love affair. Collectively, Americans will devour about 3 billion pizzas before the end of this calendar year. September 20 is National Pepperoni Pizza Day, and we should take a minute to consider whether there is any other single food that has captured our cultural creativity or embraced our ever-changing, national heritage more than this versatile staple? Pizza embodies the region where it is made. For independent pizzeria owners, it’s a labor or love. More than 75,000 pizza restaurants make up 17% of all restaurants nationwide. In the U.S., pizza has become a passion. But of course we know, like most foods, Americans can’t take credit for its invention. The origins of pizza could actually be credited to anyone who first learned the secret of…

Here’s the Most Hated Food in Each State

Having similar dislikes is just as important as having similar likes for some people. But that’s the idea behind date app Hater. The app was launched earlier this year and promises to match users based on their mutual disdain for anything from fashion stylers to celebrities and even certain foods — wouldn’t it settle so many pizza delivery problems if you and your partner both hated Hawaiian pizza? Well, the people behind Hater compiled information from more than 600,000 users to show us a profile of what foods are most commonly hated state-by-state. Some findings aren’t surprising. Washington, the coffee capital of the country, hates Keurig K-cups, while Texans who pride themselves in the meat market, can’t stand their steak cooked well done. And Vermont, the New England King of Cheese, wants nothing to do with that artificial spray cheese from a can. But some of them are hard to rationalize. How…

Restaurant quality at home with roasted red pepper sauce pizza, pasta

It’s good for our tastebuds if we mix things up every so often. Try this roasted red pepper sauce on anything you would typically top with a tomato sauce for an instant, restaurant-worthy upgrade. It’s a unique flavor all on its own, and it will give new life to those dishes you’ve made dozens or even hundreds of times before. It looks like tomato sauce, but the creamy, fiery flavor will surely make you a fan. Roasted Red Pepper Sauce Ingredients 16 oz. jar of roasted red peppers 2 tbsp water 2.5 tbsp butter 3-4 cloves of garlic 1 tbsp dried basil 1 tbsp dried oregano 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional) healthy dose of fresh cracked pepper 1/3 cup heavy cream (if using on pizza, use 1/4 or less) Directions Add peppers to blender along with 1-2 tbsp of extra liquid from the jar they came in. It’s a bit acidic, but can…

Pineapple on pizza? Canadian man credited with inventing Hawaiian dies at 83

The Canadian man who is widely credited with inventing Hawaiian pizza, setting of the world-wide debate over whether the fruit has the right to top a pie, died last week at the age of 83. Sam Panopoulos was born in Greece and emigrated to Canada in 1954 at the age of 20. He told BBC that he made the first “Hawaiian” pizza in 1962 at the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, as a fun experiment. “We just put it on, just for the fun of it, see how it was going to taste,” Panopoulos told the BBC. “We were young in the business and we were doing a lot of experiments.” Panopoulos said he and his brothers liked the sweet and savory contrast between the ham and the pineapple, and that they named it “Hawaiian” after the brand of canned pineapple they used. Pineapple on pizza became a trending debate earlier this year when the…

Why Pizza Makes Us Happy

We didn’t need science to tell us that pizza makes us happy, but a recent study conducted by DiGiorno used facial recognition and emotion-tracking software to discover exactly why. And they found something unexpected. Partygoers were at their happiest when they were anticipating the pizza — not when they were actually eating it. The happiness chart shows a huge surge in satisfaction when the participants could smell the pizzas baking in the oven, and another even larger spike when the pizzas came out of the oven. In fact, happiness increased nearly 20 percent when partygoers knew the pizza was ready. This study is in support of other studies that have proved that just anticipating joyful experiences can make us happy. https://youtu.be/B4Kses_JilE

Cadbury Creme Eggs Top Pizzas for an Easter Themed Twist

Forget the pepperoni. Put aside the pizza sauce. Easter 2017 is upon us and that means the world is about to be introduced to the Cadbury Creme Egg pizza. One London-based pizza maker teamed up with a British food delivery company, Deliveroo, to create the “Fior-egg-tina” — a twist on the Italian classic egg-topped Fiorentina. But before you get grossed out thinking about that creme center melting into your mozzarella, know that this is a completely different type of pie. A strawberry sauce base is topped with marscapone, mint leaves and Cadbury Creme Eggs halves, then sprinkled with crunchy mini eggs. It’s an unbelievable ode to one of the world’s most beloved Easter candies. The credit for this completely sweet pie goes to Crust Bros — but they’re only available via Deliveroo in London from April 7 through 14. As an American, if you’re upset this masterpiece isn’t available to you then…

Apple and Pizza Top List of America’s Favorite Pies

Millions of people around the world indulged in pie last week to celebrate the mathematical concept of pi (the Greek symbol used to represent 3.14159). The Harris Poll also celebrated by asking Americans about their favorite pie. As usual, apple pie reigns supreme (12%), but pizza comes in a close second (10%) and is, by far, the favorite type of pie among men ages 18-34 (25%). The most popular pizza topping in America continues to be pepperoni. 7 in 10 say the pie filling — not the crust — is the best part. Pie vs. cake When it comes to dessert overall, Americans are nearly evenly split, with a slight preference for cake (52%) over pie (48%) – particularly in the South, where about 6 in 10 prefer cake (61% South), but not in the Midwest where 58% of adults prefer pie. Women (56%) and young adults ages 18-34 (66%)…

From space to your place: 3D pizza printer coming soon

When you’re hungry in the future, you may be printing out your own pizza. A startup named BeeHex raised $1 million in seed funding to launch its first product, a pizza printer called Chef 3D. The concept started as a possible solution for supplying astronauts with enough food on long missions to outer space, but the company’s founders realized the opportunity in today’s current commercial market on Earth. BeeHex’s long-term goal, according to one founder, is to create a network of printers that are capable of producing customized snacks or meals on-the-spot. One day, customers may actually be able to use an app to select a food that corresponds to their health needs. The startup has earned the attention of lead investor and food automation expert Jim Grote, founder of Donatos Pizza chain of restaurants, who believes the technology could be used in high-volume pizza restaurants. BeHex cofounder Anjan Contractor said his company is currently…
