How to make homemade chili seasoning

Skip the store-bought packets and make your own chili seasoning from scratch with spices you already have in your pantry. There’s a little game in my kitchen I like to play called, “How many tiny bottles of spices can I squeeze onto the shelf.” I have dried spices for all sorts of meals that I made once, needed a specific spice blend, and never made again. Thus, the spice just sits there with others that suffered the same fate, taking up valuable space in my tiny kitchen. Chili powder isn’t one of those. It’s so versatile, I’m actually happy to lend my leftover mix some shelf space. It’s great on everything from chili to tacos to roasted veggies. Put it on potatoes or even on top of mac and cheese or corn on the cob. What can’t you put chili powder on? Here is a spice blend that I want to…

Here’s what you should have in your emergency food stockpile

Hurricane Lane dropped record-breaking heavy rains that battered Hawaii this week, but that’s likely to just be the beginning. Hurricane season is expected to run through November 30 this year, with September being the peak season for storms in the Atlantic. It’s alway best to be prepared — if not over prepared — for disasters like hurricanes, especially if you live in a high-risk area. Because you’re going to have limited supplies in the event of an emergency, it’s important to make each item in your stash count. FEMA suggests foods that require no refrigeration, water, or special cooking. Foods can also lift morale and give a feeling of security in times of stress, so leave room for a few comfort items, as well. Here are some foods suggestions that should be in your stash: 1. 15 Foods that Can Last Forever on your Shelf

Birds are chirping and green grass is growing. It’s all a sign to American households that it’s time for a much needed spring cleaning. But your annual overhaul shouldn’t be limited to your clothing closets. Chances are, your kitchen pantry could benefit from a little tidying too. Sure, you know you need to toss that stale box of cereal. And those graham crackers you left open last weekend surely should go, too. But many other items aren’t going to be as obvious. The expiration date food system can be confusing. There are as many as a dozen different ways processed food companies stamp their goods to tell us when to toss and when to keep — Sell By, Use By, Best Before. The list goes on. A new voluntary initiative is being led by two major trade associations, Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), that will streamline…

What you should know about hunger and donating to your food bank this holiday

The season of giving is upon us, and while we’re gathering with friends and family and enjoying meals, it’s also important to remember those less fortunate. One in eight people will go hungry this holiday season. While the economy may be improving since the Great Recession, many Americans are still feeling the effects of underemployment, stagnant wages and rising costs of living. In fact, more than 46 million people each year turn to Feeding America, the largest nationwide network of food banks in the country, for extra support. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is part of this support network, and employees work year-round to combat staggering statistics in the local region. “More than 322,000 people are considered food insecure in our 11 county region in Southwestern Pennsylvania,” said Beth Burrell, Communications and PR manager at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (the Food Bank). “That means, those individuals don’t know where their next meal is coming…
