Vegan-friendly foods you can order at Panera

It can be hard eating out when you’re on a vegan diet. Restaurants sneak in all sorts of extras you would never know about unless you poured through online ingredients lists for every restaurant. But who really has time for that? Whether you went vegan because you love animals or you just prefer to eat a cleaner diet, we found some plant-based, vegan-friendly food offerings from Panera are 100% safe, along with some offerings you should surprisingly shy away from. Steer clear of the white and honey wheat breads. They sound innocent enough, but Panera sneaks butter, eggs and milk into these loaves. https://www.instagram.com/p/BmLeI40gupT/ Pastries Unfortunately, not a single pastry at Panera…

Report shows restaurants that use most antibiotics in meats

Consumers Union has released its third annual “Chain Reaction” report on the prevalence of antibiotics in meat products in America’s most popular chain restaurants. Sadly, the results show most of the restaurants have failed to improve, even in the face of drug-resistant superbugs. The rankings are based on each companies’ own policies for the use of antibiotic in meat and poultry products that they buy. Pumping chickens, cows and pigs full of antibiotics intended for humans is slowly destroying our ability to treat common infections. The U.N. has called it a growing concern and potential global health crisis. More than 23,000 people die annually in the U.S. from antibiotic-resistant infections each year, according the the CDC. To combat this problem, doctors and hospitals use antibiotics more judiciously than in the past, yet 70 percent of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. aren’t intended for human use anyway, but rather in animal agriculture. “The nation’s fast food restaurant chains are…

Panera’s new cups to show added sugar, calories in drinks

Panera is rolling out new fountain cups this week that list how much added sugar is in its beverages. After customers pay the cashier, they are handed a cup to take to the drink station. The idea goes, that customers will look down at the cup and have the information, literally on hand, that they need to make smart decisions in regards to sugar intake. “We believe it’s up to companies to take the lead on transparency (and) not wait for legislation,” CEO Ron Shaich said in a statement. The company commissioned a nationwide survey, conducted by KRC Research, that found 99 percent of 1,092 respondents didn’t know the amount of added sugar in soft drink, and 83 percent underestimated the amount. The new “sweet facts” fountain cups will hit stores this week. They list the calorie and sugar content of a “regular cola” (250 calories, 17.25 teaspoons of added sugar) alongside…

Try this hidden menu hack at Panera for healthier high-protein, low-carb options

Any health-conscious consumer has probably scoped out Panera’s nutrition menu for a few healthy items for on-the-go eating. Sadly, the broccoli cheese bread bowl doesn’t make the cut for most diets. But Panera now has a “hidden menu.” These alternative items are more in line with a high-protein, low processed-carbs diet. You won’t find these items on the traditional menu, but employees at every location are guaranteed to know what you’re ordering — something that doesn’t always happen at Starbucks or other locations boasting “secret menu” items. (I felt the need to test this claim at a nearby Panera location in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the cashier didn’t even hesitate.) Given that every item, oddly, has the word “power” in the title, they probably should have just called it the “Power Menu.” Here are the items on the menu: Power Breakfast Egg White Bowl with Roasted Turkey – Sliced roasted all-natural turkey, egg whites, warm baby spinach, roasted…
