For years, experts have been telling us that full-fat dairy products like whole milk are loaded with scary saturated fats and the low-fat dairy options like skim milk are better for us. But recent research suggests that full-fat dairy may actually be healthier than and more beneficial than previously thought. The new research, published in The Lancet, found that people who eat full-fat dairy aren’t any more likely to develop heart disease or type 2 diabetes than those who opted for the low-fat versions. In fact, they might even be less likely to pack on the pounds. The observational study compiled data from about 136,000 adults across 21 countries on five continues. None of the participants had a history of heart disease, and they all completed detailed surveys, answering questions about type and frequency of dairy intake. “Got Milk?” isn’t such a simple question in today’s grocery store. Beyond the old skim or 2% battle, there are so many other options out there. Soy? Almond? Rice? What was once the simplest of transactions, with a one-size-fits-all home delivery from the milkman, has become pretty darn complicated. But a new study falls in favors of traditional cow’s milk. It turns out Mom was right in telling you you’ll get taller if you drink your milk — but only if that was cow’s milk. A study published this week in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that kids who drank non-cows milks had shorter statures than their cow milk drinking peers. Canadian researchers studied 5,034 healthy kids ages two to six over several years. They tracked what type and how much milk the children were consuming, and found that each cup of non-cow’s milk consumed was associated with 0.15 inches (0.4 centimeters) lower…

In the Southwest, horchata is sold in convenience stores right alongside Coca-a-Cola. It’s sold in strip malls, Mexican taquerias and even makes a regular appearance at simple family gatherings. But I must admit, growing up in the Northeast, I was too long sheltered from the taste of this sweet, cinnamon-laden Mexican rice milk. I now order the creamy, cinnamon bespeckled beverage every chance I get, and rarely have I had a Northern friend in my presence who has tried it before.
