What people are stockpiling during the coronavirus panic

There’s no denying that fears of a widerspread coronavirus outbreak are sweeping the nation. Despite what health experts are recommending at this time, U.S. citizens are stockpiling extra dry goods in the event they find themselves stuck at home for some amount of time. Face mask, hand sanitizer, and cases of bottled water have been flying off grocery store shelves for weeks, but what are the other most sought after items? According to Nielsen data, shelf-stable and longer-lasting foods have seen a spike in sales since late February, while fresh produce sales are noticeably lower. CNBC compared how this years product sales are comparing to last year’s sales of the sale time period. At U.S. stores, fruit snacks sales were up by nearly 13%. Here’s what you should have in your emergency food stockpile

Hurricane Lane dropped record-breaking heavy rains that battered Hawaii this week, but that’s likely to just be the beginning. Hurricane season is expected to run through November 30 this year, with September being the peak season for storms in the Atlantic. It’s alway best to be prepared — if not over prepared — for disasters like hurricanes, especially if you live in a high-risk area. Because you’re going to have limited supplies in the event of an emergency, it’s important to make each item in your stash count. FEMA suggests foods that require no refrigeration, water, or special cooking. Foods can also lift morale and give a feeling of security in times of stress, so leave room for a few comfort items, as well. Here are some foods suggestions that should be in your stash: 1. Water Of course water is first and foremost. FEMA recommends having one gallon of…

Houston bakers make hundreds of loaves of bread for Harvey victims after hurricane strands them

When four bakers at El Bolillo Bakery in Houston, Texas became trapped in the shop by Hurricane Harvey for two days, they decided to make the most of their uncertain situation. Since the specialty Mexican bake shop still had electricity, the men decided to keep the ovens running and churned out countless loaves of bread for those who they knew would be affected by the devastating downpours. Brian Alvarado, the manager of the shop told The Independent: “When they realized they were stuck, they decided to keep themselves busy and help the community and made as many loaves of bread as they could.” The loaves were delivered to emergency centers across the city. The men didn’t count how many loaves they made, but they used 4,400 pounds of flour. (For reference, the sack in your cabinet is probably a measly 5 pounds.) The bakery’s Facebook post about the baker’s efforts has gone…

Donate to food shelters affected by Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey made landfall two days ago and dumped more than 2 feet of rain on thousands of people in Houston and on the Gulf Coast. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott activated the entire Texas National Guard. As the hurricane continues to drop heavy rainfall and floodwaters continue to rise, many organizations are doing vital work to help the FEMA estimated 30,000 people without shelter and thousands more who are struggling during this difficult time. Here is a list of food shelters serving the region that could use your support. Everybody Craves is in no way tied to these organizations, and it’s best to do research before donating to any nonprofit organization. Consider donating money instead of food, since money can arrive much fast via digital means and it allows the food bank to use your donation where they need it most. Feeding Texas is a statewide nonprofit that works with state and…
