Brownie batter dessert hummus recipe

Yes, you read that right. This recipe calls for melted chocolate and chickpeas… together! When I learned about “dessert hummus” I couldn’t decide if it was some crazy gimmick or pure, culinary genius. You can now firmly file me in the latter category. If you’re all about the edible cookie dough trend, or if you can’t stop licking the brownie batter from the bowl, this recipe is definitely for you. No raw eggs here! Just protein-and fiber-packed garbanzos, chocolate, a pinch of flaky salt, and a splash of vanilla. It makes a thick and creamy spread, just like regular hummus, except it’s sweet, so it’s great for smearing on breakfast toast. Use it in place of those unhealthy hazelnut spreads. Dip fresh fruit, pretzels, pitas or eat by the spoonful for a healthier alternative to sweet snacking any time of day. And try easy Banana Dessert Hummus, too! 5-ingredient Chocolate…

Guilt-free banana dessert hummus recipe

I admit that the name “dessert hummus” is sort of baffling to the tastebuds. You can imagine the slightly gritty, savory texture of pulverized chickpeas in traditional hummus but can’t quite image how “sweet” can come anywhere near this popular appetizer. Two week ago, I was a skeptic just like you. Hummus flavors like sun-dried tomato and roasted red pepper are all the rage, but a coworker suggested I try to make a sweet hummus, or dessert hummus. She had seen them on Pinterest, and read the overwhelmingly positive comments people were saying. So off I went in pursuit of a sweet hummus recipe. The only problem I pondered, was that hummus is supposed to be healthy. I didn’t want to load it up with heavy nut butters and certainly not any sugar. So here it is folks. My dessert hummus. Sweetened only with the natural flavors of banana and…

Sweet Potato Chipotle Hummus

Originally published March 1, 2017 A recipe for a Sweet Potato Chipotle Hummus recently piqued my interest. Armed with a leftover sweet potato to use up from dinner last night, I gave it a try. The recipe is supposed to taste like classic hummus with a sweet and spicy flare. Instead, of straight garbanzo beans and sesame, this recipe calls to replace half the usual beans with one baked sweet potato. The substitution adds a creamy sweetness that was great on chips and cucumbers slices. The recipe was easily accomplished in the Vitamix, but needed more than the suggested 2 tablespoons of olive oil to help it along. I added a sprinkling of salt and pepper as well as a good amount of cayenne for both taste and show. If you love hummus, you’ll love this creative rendition. Here’s the recipe with my adjustments. Sweet Potato Chipotle Hummus Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 0 minutes Total Time: 20 minutes Servings: 8…

Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Pinwheels

Here’s a fun way to use your roasted red pepper hummus. It’s a great after school snack for kids, or a great appetizer for game day. Serve it with your favorite ranch dressing or a healthier Greek yogurt version. The great part, you can include whatever veggies you have on hand, and it’s sure to still taste delicious. After all, hummus is good for making everything taste amazing. Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Pinwheels Yields 36 rolls/ Serves 4 Ingredients 4 large tortilla wraps (I used spinach flavor) 8 tbsp roasted red pepper hummus 8 thin slices of your favorite cheese (I used colby jack) 8 oz. of turkey, thinly sliced 1 cup roasted red pepper slices 1/2 cup canned mushrooms Directions Lay out the tortillas and spread 2 tbsp hummus over each wrap. Divide the turkey into 4 and top each tortilla with meat and two slices of cheese. Divide vegetables…

Homemade Roasted Red Pepper Hummus

I whipped up another hummus recipe this weekend — roasted red pepper hummus. This one is probably my favorite yet. The roasted red peppers and cayenne pepper give this dip a smooth and creamy texture with a delicious sweet heat. It’s bursting with fresh flavors. If you’ve only ever had store-bought hummus, you’re missing out. It’s so simple to make and easily customizable, you can have complete control over snack time no matter your diet. I roasted my own red peppers because it only takes about 20 minutes and keeps the salt content down. But you can use jarred red peppers from the grocery store if you’re in a hurry. ROASTED RED PEPPER HUMMUS Ingredients 2 medium red bell peppers (about one 10 oz. jar) 1 can of chickpeas (about 15 oz.) 1 lemon, halved 1/4 cup tahini 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tbsp olive oil 1/4 cup water 1 tsp salt 1/4 cayenne pepper Directions Preheat oven to 450ºF. Cut…

Here’s the Most Hated Food in Each State

Having similar dislikes is just as important as having similar likes for some people. But that’s the idea behind date app Hater. The app was launched earlier this year and promises to match users based on their mutual disdain for anything from fashion stylers to celebrities and even certain foods — wouldn’t it settle so many pizza delivery problems if you and your partner both hated Hawaiian pizza? Well, the people behind Hater compiled information from more than 600,000 users to show us a profile of what foods are most commonly hated state-by-state. Some findings aren’t surprising. Washington, the coffee capital of the country, hates Keurig K-cups, while Texans who pride themselves in the meat market, can’t stand their steak cooked well done. And Vermont, the New England King of Cheese, wants nothing to do with that artificial spray cheese from a can. But some of them are hard to rationalize. How…

Creamy Roasted Beet Hummus: Your new favorite snack

Hummus has taken hold over most of America. Just a few years ago, most people had never heard of the traditional Mediterranean dip. Today, we can’t get enough of this creamy snack spread made from chickpeas, sesame seed paste and seasonings. Millennials, in particular, tend to gravitate toward new and unusual flavors. A new generation paired with a strong commitment to healthier dietary choices paved the way for the unusual light brown spread that packed a nutritional punch. Americans have been so receptive of hummus, in fact, that sales have started to creep towards those of other popular dips like salsa and guacamole. According to the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council, hummus sales in grocery stores now top $725 million annually — up from $5 just 20 years ago. It is estimated that one in four homes now regularly stock hummus in the fridge. Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, have been cultivated in Middle…

Cool down with mint this summer

When days heat up, a dish prepared with light, crisp mint leaves will taste delicious. The cooling, sweet flavor of mint goes great with both sweet and savory dishes — try it with anything from omelettes to ice cream. While mint is easy to find at your local market this time of year, it’s simple enough that you should be growing it yourself. Seriously. It’s one of the easiest herbs to grow. It’s fragrant and fast-growing and requires a very minimal time commitment. Plant in a  container on your porch for easiest maintenance, since mint grown directly in the garden soil has a tendency to spread in weed-like fashion. When choosing your location, find a spot where the plant will receive morning sunlight and partial afternoon shade. Mint is pretty resilient, so the natural rain water might be all you need, depending on where you live. Just keep an eye on the pot’s soil. If it starts…
