Honey soy glazed salmon

If you want a fancy-yet-easy main dish, look no further than baked salmon fillets. It can be a midweek date go-to as much as it can  be an al fresco meal with friends, or even a romantic night in. Salmon pretty much always suits the occasion. This baked salmon comes out beautifully with little-to-no effort. The marinade is an interesting blend of sweet and sour flavors. It’s similar to a teriyaki sauce, though it takes its main spice ingredients from Chinese and Thai cuisine. Also try these Spicy Thai tuna stuffed avocados. To cook, let your fillets soak up the marinade for about 2 hours before baking (no less than 30 minutes), then place in preheated oven (350ºF). Even thick salmon fillets cook quickly, so don’t stray too far from the kitchen. As a rule of thumb, salmon needs four to six minutes cook time per half-inch of thickness. Start…

Blue and green blueberry avocado smoothie

Mornings that start with smoothies are the best mornings. They’re such a nice, light and filling guilt-free breakfast option. Plus, I just love getting creative and trying different flavor combinations — but not as much as I love squeezing in a few servings for fruits and veggies before 9 a.m. Seriously, I make smarter eating decisions all day because I know I’ve had a great start. Why stop there? I think to myself. It’s true what they say. One healthy decision really does lead to another, and another, and another. Days that start with donuts definitely don’t inspire gym workouts. If you’re trying to get in better shape this year, start with your mornings and go from there. Try this healthy blue and green blueberry avocado smoothie — it’s one of my favorites — and see if you don’t feel like making other healthy choices, too. Blue and green blueberry…

10 foods that aren’t what you think they are

There’s nothing like watching a baseball game while snacking on a bag full of legumes, except perhaps, sitting down to dinner with some warm, crusty Italian bread dipped in soybean oil. Yes, what we eat isn’t always what we think we’re eating. Here are 10 foods that you’re probably not getting what you think you paid for. Maple Syrup Those images of flannel-clad men tapping a tree in the wilderness are pretty much the stuff of yesterday for most mass-produced syrup brands. If your bottle says “pancake syrup” or “imitation maple,” it’s likely just flavored maple (with fillers like corn syrup and other sugars) without containing much — if any — real maple. Stick with bottles that say “pure maple syrup” when you want to smother your homemade pancake stack with the real deal. Try these must-make Lemon Poppyseed Pancakes. Crab stick Ever wonder why crab stick is so inexpensive…

Birds are chirping and green grass is growing. It’s all a sign to American households that it’s time for a much needed spring cleaning. But your annual overhaul shouldn’t be limited to your clothing closets. Chances are, your kitchen pantry could benefit from a little tidying too.
