How the real Granny Smith accidentally discovered her namesake apple

The next time you take a bite from the pointy tip of a slice of apple pie, consider what makes it taste so irresistible. The key to America’s most iconic dessert lies in the unique tartness of Granny Smith apples. But how did such a popular, crisp, bright green apple get such a homely name? Fans of the chartreuse green fall fruit might be surprised that there really was a Granny Smith for which the apple was named. But she didn’t live in Pennsylvania, New York or anywhere else in the United States that is seemingly synonymous with harvesting apples. Granny Smith and her namesake apple both called a small town outside of Sydney, Australia home. As the story goes, Maria Ann Sherwood was born in 1799 in Sussex, England. At age 19, she married Thomas Smith and together had numerous children. During the colonial period of England, the government was offering incentives to any citizens willing to relocate and work its new lands. In 1830,…

Pineapple Guacamole Recipe

Sometimes all you want for dinner is a big bowl of guacamole. Let’s be honest — we’ve all had meals much worse than that. Avocados and pineapple are two of my favorite ingredients, so it only seemed natural to put them together to create one of my other favorite foods — guacamole. The sweetness of the pineapple pairs perfectly with the not-so-subtle jolt of heat from the jalapeño. I must admit, I came across this idea at a local restaurant that had a variation of a pineapple, bacon guac on the appetizers menu. I’m not much of a bacon fan, but if that’s you, feel free to crumble up some slices and sprinkle on top. Otherwise, this recipe is vegan and will only take you about 10 minutes Scoop this sweet and spicy combination onto a blue corn tortilla chip for a picture perfect bite. The secret behind the Starbucks apron colors

In 75 countries around the world, Starbucks is recognized by the color green. From its circular green logo, to the 23,000 locations with more than 300,000 employees who wear green aprons. But have you ever noticed a barista not wearing green? Maybe you saw black, orange or red. What is this secret code in Starbucks coffeehouse apparel? The apron has been a part of Starbucks since the first day it opened its doors in 1971 to Seattle’s Pike Place Market. At the time, employees wore basic brown grocer’s aprons — the same shade as the original logo. According to a post on the company’s website, by 1987 the green apron replaced the brown aprons to became the standard issue — now matching the green logo. Today, anyone working at a Starbucks can wear the company’s signature green color. But other colors are earned. If an employee has military experience or graduated from the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, they  might…

Smoothie bowl, so fresh and so green

Swap your favorite smoothie glass for a bowl and spoon this morning. If you’ve never tried a smoothie bowl, you’re in for some food fun. I like to do this variation on the classic when I have produce just too beautiful for the blender. I’ll use a mostly unsweetened smoothie base, heavy on greens, and I’ll top it with naturally sweet fruits and nuts. To make, combine almond milk with your favorite vibrant leafy greens. I used kale, but you could do any number of variations — spinach, arugula and maybe even a bit of parsley. This recipe is actually a great way to use up whatever odd portions of produce you have in your fridge. I topped mine with tangy, tropical kiwi and coconut, banana and almond slices, and chia seeds for additional protein. I like the texture they bring to the smoothie bowl as well. Green Goodness Smoothie Bowl Ingredients 3/4 cup almond (or…

17 Naturally Green Foods for St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is one of those holidays that we tend to celebrate most via food coloring. Americans squeeze a few green drops into everything possible this time of year — donuts, cupcakes, milkshakes, ketchup, and, of course, beer. You’re bound to wind up consuming some level of FD & C Green No. 3 in the name of “celebration” this month. There isn’t a lot of evidence proving that dyes are bad for us, but some experts think they could possibly worsen hyperactivity in children, and they might be bad for digestion. The Huffington Post reported, “The worst that could happen is probably some gastrointestinal discomfort, according to Dr. Braden Kuo, an assistant physician at Harvard Medical School and at the GI Unit of Massachusetts General Hospital. Artificial food dyes and additives are often not meant to be absorbed by the body, he explains, and instead may weigh heavily on the bowel, which, in turn, can suck water into the bowels, resulting…
