5 gifts the ‘crunchy mama’ would totally love

Crunchy. Granola. Earth Mama. These labels aren’t usually insults, rather, they evoke an image of someone who does things a little less conventionally for the health of his or her family. Sometimes people who get labeled as “crunchy” don’t even think of themselves that way! They’re just living their best life. Whether it’s an obsession with organic groceries (and hand creams, and clothes, and diapers, etc.) or a chicken coop in their backyard, they’re down to live life the most wholesome way they know how—and that’s by DIY with many of their own foods right at home. Shopping for someone in the crunchy camp can be difficult if you don’t know their personal rulebook. But you can bet they’ll actually use—and actually appreciate—any one of these great 5 DIY in the kitchen gadgets below. 1. Pumpkin banana smoothie a delicious breakfast for fall

I know what you’re thinking. It’s not technically even fall yet. If you’re one of those people who can’t even look at a pumpkin until September 21, then I advise you to temporarily seek recipes elsewhere. I’m about to blow up this blog with pumpkin recipes — this Pumpkin Banana smoothie is just the beginning. I love using a bit of pumpkin puree in my fall breakfast smoothies. It’s an easy way to add fiber and flavor while getting in a festive mood. Plus, pumpkin is packed with protein, rich in antioxidants, and high in vitamin A. One trick I can’t emphasize enough is freezing your fruit — or even just half of it. So, say your recipe calls for berries and bananas — make sure your berries are frozen and use a fresh banana. Freezing at least one of your fruits can save you from having to water your…

The best chicken salad ever

The best chicken salad I ever had was from a little bistro up the street from where I used to work. Sadly, it went out of business in just a few short years, but I still believe they could have kept their doors open with their chicken salad alone had more people discovered their incredible combination. I’m not sure of their exact recipe, but like all delicious, good-for-you food, all of the main ingredients were right there, whole and easily identifiable. The red grapes were a welcome addition to the crunchy cashews, and flavorful fresh dill. The mayo mix was light, and just present enough to stick all of the ingredients together. I swapped the classic chicken salad croissant for a slice of toasted brioche out of preference, but you serve on any bread you would like, or just spread it on a few hearty crackers. Also try, Healthy avocado…

Garlicky Greek yogurt Alfredo sauce

There are a few foods that are banished from every dieter’s personal menu — Alfredo sauce being one of them. The thick, creamy restaurant staple is usually loaded with butter, cream and cheese. It’s perfect with whole wheat noodles as a healthy weeknight meal, or on top of a protein for a more special occasion. Creamy apple crisp smoothie

The four pecks of apples in my house have me coming up with all kinds of uses for them. Canning, pies, cobblers. But whatever I do, it doesn’t seem to make a dent in the bushel. At least I’m getting some great recipes from my race against the clock with my apples’ expiration date. I usually prefer to juice my extra apples. They add the perfect sweetness to celery, ginger juice, among others. But I decided to try something new this year and add them to the blender for a smoothie. Made with farm fresh apples, tart Greek yogurt, old-fashioned oats, milk and cinnamon, this creamy concoction mimics the taste of apple cobbler without coming close in calorie count. And it’s is a much healthier start to your day than a dessert. Depending on how good your blender is, you may want to chop the almonds ahead of time. Also, leave the apple skin on. No one…
