The chapter revived the donut making tradition as a way to provide much-needed cheer and raise funds for people in need during the Great Depression. The day honored the women who made doughnuts for the soldiers during WWI as a way to boost morale. At their peak, the women could make and supply up to 9,000 doughnuts per day. National Doughnut Day has since become an American tradition and continues to be celebrated the first Friday in June. Many national and local doughnut chains offer freebies or discounts…

Here’s how your favorite chefs make mac and cheese

The next time you want to feast on some cheesy, gooey goodness, remember eating mac and cheese is part of our national heritage — It’s downright patriotic. Legend has it that mac and cheese came to the United Sates courtesy of Thomas Jefferson, who became enamored with the pasta dish while visiting France. It was Jefferson who brought home noodle recipes and a pasta machine to the States, since these things were unavailable in the Colonies at the time. He loved the dish so much, he even served it at a state dinner in 1802. Flash forward a few decades. Kraft Foods marketed its boxed macaroni and cheese in 1937 during the throes of the Great Depression. One box could serve a family of four for just 19 cents. Celebrate National Sangria Day, Wine not?

The holidays can be a stressful time of year, so it’s no coincidence National Sangria Day, December 20, 2017, falls right in the middle of them. Forget shopping, forgetting complicated cooking recipes, forget awkward family functions. Put some relaxation back into your month with a little sangria. A little splash of history The name sangria comes from the word sangre, or blood, and refers to the drink’s often dark color. The first sangrias were likely dark wine, watered down with mixes of water, wine, herbs and spices. Thus, sangria was born. Though Spain and Portugal can claim its origins, today sangria is enjoyed all over the world. Whether you drink it on a patio in the summer to cool off, or…
