Sometimes you just need to fill your stomach, but other times, you’re going out for the food as much as the ambiance. As the biggest dining out holiday of the year approaches, OpenTable, an online provider of dining reservations, unveiled what users voted as the most romantic restaurants. More than 12 million verified experiences were tabulated, so it’s safe to say this isn’t just one person’s opinion on romance. The complete list is pretty diverse and includes 32 different states. More millennials, teens turning to cooking at home, survey shows

Making dinner at home is making a comeback. After decades of consumer preferences leaning toward dining out, a new survey shows that American preferences are starting to shift. The new momentum is largely a cost-saving move by millennials, but also a result of an increased interest in health and family time. According to a recent survey, 73 percent of adults currently make dinner at home at least four nights a week, but millennials are pushing that trend even further. Fifty percent surveyed they have intentions to cook at home more often than that in 2018. And 79 percent of teens, or those in the temporarily dubbed post-millennial generation — surveyed that they wanted their parents to cook at home more in 2018. One in three teens expressed an interest in helping their parents cook at home more often as a way to help their family eat healthier. So what’s causing the shift? About…

Too many restaurants in America are causing industry trouble

The restaurant industry can expect some troubled times ahead. After a prolonged period of growth, fueled by Wall Street, experts say the market is now oversaturated with casual, fast-food and chain restaurants, the New York Times reports. After the dot-com bust, many investors turned away from Silicon Valley and looked toward the hospitality sector for more reliable — although smaller — returns. The New York Times reported that Wall Street “poured billions into the restaurant industry.” In recent years, the number of restaurants in the U.S. — currently estimated at about 620,000 — has grown at twice the rate of the population. It’s true that customers are faced with busy lifestyles and continue to spend a large portion of their food budget at restaurants. But that dollar amount is now being spread across an ever-increasing number of establishments, so profits are divided into smaller and smaller pieces. Changes in single-store sales over time are down to the lowest they’ve been…

Chipotle announces highly anticipated arrival of queso

Cheese lovers rejoice! Starting today, you can finally add queso to your Chipotle burrito bowl. Earlier this month, America’s favorite fast, casual Mexican chain announced that starting September 12 queso would be available on its U.S. menu nationwide. “Although queso was the number one requested menu item, we never added it to our menu before now because we wouldn’t use the industrial additives used in most quesos,” said CEO Steve Ells in a press release. The new Chipotle queso is what they’re calling a “complex and slightly spicy flavored” cheese sauce. It’s made from aged cheddar cheese, tomatillos, tomatoes and several varieties of peppers. And, staying true to their core mission, no preservatives were used — except for lemon and lime juice, which are used for flavor, but can also serve as a natural preservative. Customers can order queso on their entrée (for about $1.25), or on the side as a dip for tortilla chips…

Chick-fil-A rolling out gluten-free bun, but there’s a catch

Chick-fil-A has gone gluten free! Not entirely, but the nationwide chicken sandwich chain is poised to capitalize on its consumers’ dietary needs with a new menu offering. Chick-fil-A announced on Monday that it will offer gluten-free buns at restaurants nationwide, after reportedly receiving positive feedback from test marketed areas in 2016. The gluten-free bun is made with ancient grains quinoa and amaranth and sweetened with molasses and raisins. “We know our customers are looking for more gluten-sensitive alternatives. They asked, and we listened,” said Leslie Neslage, senior consultant of menu development at Chick-fil-A in a release on the company’s Chicken Wire. “Our hope is that the Gluten-Free Bun addition opens up options for gluten-sensitive customers to enjoy more of our menu.” The new bun can be ordered with any of the restaurant’s sandwiches. But there is one catch. Customers who order the gluten-free buns will have to assemble their sandwiches themselves. According to…

Mom-and-Pop restaurants making a comeback

After years of growth for the nation’s big chain restaurants, independents and smaller chains are now where Americans are choosing to spend their dollars. Diners are showing they appreciate the authenticity of locally-owned eateries with their daily specials and original decor. This, after several decades of dominance of chain restaurant’s consistency. It’s a turning point in our eating history, according to Darren Tristano, chief insights officer at Chicago-based restaurant research first Technomic. “This really seems to be the dawning of the era of the independent,” Tristano said. “The independents and small chains are now outperforming. The big chains are now lagging.” Annual revenues are expected to grow about 5 percent through 2020, while chains are expected to grow about 3 percent, according to Pentallect Inc., a research firm in Chicago. Last year, the nation’s largest food chain, Subway, by number of locations, saw doors closing. Trends were also reflected with restaurants like…

25 Years of Loving Cheddar Bay Biscuits at Red Lobster

If all of the Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits served in one day were stacked up, it would tower the height of the Empire State Building 137 times! We’ve been eating Cheddar Bay Biscuits at Red Lobster for 25 years now. Surely that calculation would have our biscuit consumption reaching the moon and back. That’s right. For a quarter century we’ve been craving those fresh out-of-the-oven cheddary carb bombs. The mid-range seafood restaurant first starting offering the biscuits in 1992. Originally offered as “freshly baked, hot cheese garlic bread,” the biscuits changed name a few years later to better reflect the other seaside offerings of the restaurant and more accurately describe what they are — I mean, they are definitely biscuits, no? You may remember, they were also originally served to guests waiting to be seated, rather than in a basket table side. The biscuits became so popular, guests requested them…
