Fans will eat 1.35 billion wings on Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl is supposed to be a day about football, but we really know it’s really an excuse to chow down. While what food you eat during the big game is largely determined by where you live, there’s one food that flies above all others nationwide: chicken wings. According to the National Chicken Council, more wings will be consumed this weekend than ever before on Super Bowl weekend. Fans will eat 1.35 billion wings on Feb. 4 as the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots battle for the Lombardi Trophy. That number is up 1.5 percent — 20 million wings — from last year. “There will be no wing shortage,” said Chicken Council spokesperson Tom Super. “Although we do anticipate an uptick in chicken cheesesteaks.” To visualize just how many wings that is, imagine 625 wings piled on every seat in all 32 NFL stadiums. Or better yet, lay them…

10 Healthy slow cooker recipes to make this month

We’re all guilty of it. We play appliance favorites. Some months it’s the juicer. Some months its the Kitchen Aid mixer or the pizza stone. It seems I can’t balance my attention and use of my kitchen tools evenly. If they were children, I would have some problems to deal with. Thankfully, they are objects and can not notice or care — but I do. My crock pot sat unused last year until January when I finally brought it down off the shelf for the first time. I think of all the easy, healthy meals I missed making for myself last winter. This year, I’m making it a point to bring out the slow cooker early and use it often throughout the months to come. Here are a few slow cooker meals I’ve tried in the past that I can completely recommend. I’ll post a few of my own in the coming weeks, but enjoy…

17 strange food phobias you won’t believe exist

Halloween is drawing near, and while we’re in the mood to celebrate all things spooky and strange, let’s talk about food phobias. While fears of spiders and heights are quite common, once you get into the fear of foods, things can get pretty weird, pretty quickly. Not to judge anyone’s irrational fears (I myself am cartoonishly afraid of spiders), but it’s hard to imagine anyone being legitimately scared by broccoli. When thinking about food phobias, it’s important to distinguish dislikes from fears. Most people have strong preferences, but phobics experience genuine panic, sweating and nausea when faced with the food of their nightmares. For your Halloween holiday reading pleasure, here are the strangest food fears: cibophobia (see-boh-fo-biah)  The Fear of Food/Eating The most inconvenient food phobia of them all. Cibophobics typically have had a scarring experience with food poisoning or deal with large number of food allergies. This phobia can, of course, be deadly if not treated. MAGEIROCoPHOBIA…

Report shows restaurants that use most antibiotics in meats

Consumers Union has released its third annual “Chain Reaction” report on the prevalence of antibiotics in meat products in America’s most popular chain restaurants. Sadly, the results show most of the restaurants have failed to improve, even in the face of drug-resistant superbugs. The rankings are based on each companies’ own policies for the use of antibiotic in meat and poultry products that they buy. Pumping chickens, cows and pigs full of antibiotics intended for humans is slowly destroying our ability to treat common infections. The U.N. has called it a growing concern and potential global health crisis. More than 23,000 people die annually in the U.S. from antibiotic-resistant infections each year, according the the CDC. To combat this problem, doctors and hospitals use antibiotics more judiciously than in the past, yet 70 percent of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. aren’t intended for human use anyway, but rather in animal agriculture. “The nation’s fast food restaurant chains are…

KFC knows you needed drumstick socks, launches online retail store

When you go to sleep at night, don’t you wish you could cuddle up with the Colonel? Now you can. KFC just launched a retail store of “finger lickin’ good” apparel and home décor. From  pillowcases printed with Sanders’ face to socks stamped with drumsticks, fast-food fans will find the items quite amusing. The fried-chicken swag starts at $8 for a pair of socks to $20 for an over-sized chicken sandwich lapel pin. A framed 11″x14″ print of KFC’s famous mashed potatoes is priced at $80. “Our fans were craving a way to embrace the fried chicken lifestyle, and KFC Ltd. gives them the opportunity to let their colonel flag fly,” said Steve Kelly, KFC U.S. director of media and digital, in a statement. Perhaps the most unusual item on the new site is a meteorite cut to look like the Zinger check sandwich. Retailing for $20,000, the item is said to be a…

Simple watermelon salsa is sweet, mildly spicy

Who would have thought watermelon and jalapeño would be such a delicious pair? What’s better, is that this quick condiment only requires six ingredients. I’ve been experimenting with a lot of watermelon lately, so get ready for quite a few juicy recipes coming up.. This one was one of my favorites, since it’s a perfect match-up of sweet and spicy, combined with saltiness from the chips. I’ve only tried it as a salsa so far, but I could see this going great with grilled chicken or fish, or atop a grilled vegetable dinner. Watermelon Salsa Serves 6-8: Prep time 10 min Ingredients 4 cups watermelon (seedless, or seeds removed and chopped) 1 cup cucumber, chopped 1 cup red onion (about 1/2 large onion, chopped) 2 medium jalapeños (remove seeds for less heat, chopped) 1 cup fresh cilantro, chopped 1 lime, cut in half salt (to taste) Directions Add watermelon, cucumber, onion,…

Chick-fil-A rolling out gluten-free bun, but there’s a catch

Chick-fil-A has gone gluten free! Not entirely, but the nationwide chicken sandwich chain is poised to capitalize on its consumers’ dietary needs with a new menu offering. Chick-fil-A announced on Monday that it will offer gluten-free buns at restaurants nationwide, after reportedly receiving positive feedback from test marketed areas in 2016. The gluten-free bun is made with ancient grains quinoa and amaranth and sweetened with molasses and raisins. “We know our customers are looking for more gluten-sensitive alternatives. They asked, and we listened,” said Leslie Neslage, senior consultant of menu development at Chick-fil-A in a release on the company’s Chicken Wire. “Our hope is that the Gluten-Free Bun addition opens up options for gluten-sensitive customers to enjoy more of our menu.” The new bun can be ordered with any of the restaurant’s sandwiches. But there is one catch. Customers who order the gluten-free buns will have to assemble their sandwiches themselves. According to…

Mother’s Day is busiest day at KFC

Mom has a secret love she’s never shared all of these years. Mother’s Day is a big day for dining out. More than half of Americans celebrating Mother’s Day plan a special brunch or dinner. According to the National Retail Federation, 55.9 percent of mothers celebrating will get taken out for a special meal. But when we can assume Mom has her pick of places, where does she choose to dine? KFC. According to YUM Brands, KFC sees its best day of business all year on Mother’s Day. And it’s not even close. Single stores report sales jumps of 50 percent on the annual holiday. KFC says it serves about 370,000 families each Mother’s Day. That translates to 6.5 million pieces — or 1.5 million pounds — of chicken and 815,000 servings of mashed potatoes and gravy. So celebrate your favorite matriarch this Sunday with a box of chocolates and a bucket of…
