What you should know about hunger and donating to your food bank this holiday

The season of giving is upon us, and while we’re gathering with friends and family and enjoying meals, it’s also important to remember those less fortunate. One in eight people will go hungry this holiday season. While the economy may be improving since the Great Recession, many Americans are still feeling the effects of underemployment, stagnant wages and rising costs of living. In fact, more than 46 million people each year turn to Feeding America, the largest nationwide network of food banks in the country, for extra support. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is part of this support network, and employees work year-round to combat staggering statistics in the local region. “More than 322,000 people are considered food insecure in our 11 county region in Southwestern Pennsylvania,” said Beth Burrell, Communications and PR manager at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (the Food Bank). “That means, those individuals don’t know where their next meal is coming…

“The Rock” uses cereal to claim his 5th Guinness World Record

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is known for his bulging muscles as much as he is for his tough-guy roles in Blockbusters like San Andreas, the Fast and the Furious and Hercules. The towering 6ft. 4in. a-list actor and WWE star’s diet consists of more than 10 pounds of food each day, so you might be forgiven if you thought his recent Guinness World Record was for something like crushing a boulder or lifting a semi-truck. But you’d be wrong — He used cereal. Johnson’s production company, Seven Bucks Digital Studios, created a domino maze using 3,006 cereal boxes. The boxes were lined up in connected rows so they would fall in a continuous stream and create a form of culinary optical eye candy. The previous record was 2,686 cereal boxes. According to the Guinness World Records guidelines, the cereal boxes used need to be commercially available and cannot be tampered with or altered in any…

‘Turkey On The Table’ is newest holiday crazy

It’s nice to see Thanksgiving getting a little love. The Elf of the Shelf has been hanging around American homes for over a decade now. Somehow, this creepy inanimate object has stolen the hearts of millions of kids. Not to be outdone, Hanukkah inspired its own version, 2013’s The Mensch on a Bench. Now maybe we can all come together for something a little more secular, in celebration of a holiday often overlooked. Turkey on the Table ($39.99) was launched by California moms April George and Kerry Manus in 2015. Like the Elf and the Mensch, the faux turkey comes with a book (featuring an adorable looking turkey) and paper feathers. In the weeks leading up to the big feast, kids are supposed to write things they’re grateful for on the feathers, and stick them in the plush turkey’s backend to make a tail. “Start a tradition, give thanks and give back,” the company promotes. Additional packs of feathers are for sale when…

Food bank received antique Heinz soup can donation

We’re all guilty of it. When it’s time to donate to the food bank, we go to our shelves and pull off some items without giving the expiration date much thought. But one food bank was stunned after a mystery donor left a 47-year-old tin can of soup. It’s a record!! Never had a donation with 10d on before! Please could we remind everyone that food donated needs to be in date! Thank you 🙂 pic.twitter.com/EVf5qMulA6 — Cardiff Foodbank (@CardiffFoodbank) October 5, 2017 The workers at the Cardiff Foodbank posted a picture of antique can of Heinz kidney soup to Twitter. The photo showed a price tag with 10d stamped it. The can is thought to be about 46 or 47 years old, dating to at least before 1971 when Britain adopted a decimal system for their currency. Heinz hasn’t even made kidney soup in 35 years. It’s believed that the soup…

Free cones for a cause at Dairy Queen

What better way to celebrate spring than with a free ice cream cone? Dairy Queen announced stores (excluding DQs in malls) will be giving away one free small vanilla soft-serve cone all day long on March 20. Dubbed “Free Cone Day”, the fast-food company uses this day to collect donations for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, a group of about 170 hospitals across the US and Canada that treat more than 32 million children every year. Over the last 30 years, Dairy Queen has raised more than $100 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. American Dairy Queen Corporation’s executive vice president of marketing, Barry Westrum said, “We can’t think of a better way to show our appreciation to fans, kick off the spring season and support such an amazing cause than with a Free Cone Day.” So grab a few friends next Monday, and make a small donation to DQ’s favorite charity. You’ll be…
