Asheville, North Carolina is best U.S. city for beer lovers, report shows

To say that craft beer is popular in America is a serious understatement. Once dominated by big time cities like San Diego, Austin, and Denver, now even tiny American towns can now point tourists and passerby to their local town brewery. Yes, Americans love beer. But what city can claim to be craft beer’s biggest fans? If you consider yourself a craft beer lover, perhaps you should pack your bags and head for Asheville, North Carolina. A recent data report compiled by ApartmentGuide.com shows that the outdoorsy southern city has the most breweries per capita of anywhere in the country. In fact, Asheville has nearly 30 breweries just within city limits (that’s 28 breweries for every 100,000 people), including nationally recognized names like Sierra Nevada and New Belgium. Other outposts include Highland Brewing Company (Asheville’s oldest brewery, 1994), Green Man Brewery, French Broad River Brwery, Catawba Brewing Company, and Eurisko…

12 Iconic All-American foods invented right here at home

American cuisine takes a lot of flack for borrowing heavily from other cultures. Even the beloved hot dog and apple pie are imports (thanks Germany and England!). Over the decades, so many nationalities have influenced the food scene in the United States, it might be hard to point to many original inventions in your daily diet. But here are 12 everyday foods that you can proudly say are purely a product of America: Pecan Pie: Pecan pie is practically a food group in the Southern states. To claim anyone else came up with this classic would be a crime. Early New Orleans settlers from France are often credited with inventing the dish after they were introduced to the pecan but by Native American tribes. Corn Dogs: The classic American street food can be traced back to the Texas State Fair sometime between 1938 and 1942, when Carl and Neil Fletcher started selling their corn battered hot…

Star spangled ice cream sandwiches

Ice cream sandwiches already scream summer, but with a little makeover, they can be the coolest Fourth of July treat at the table. Okay, this “recipe” is basically cheating. But if you want to add a little fun to your Fourth of July without any effort — literally, like zero effort — then you’ll love this simple trick. Buy a pack of ice cream sandwiches from the grocery store — or ice cream truck! I went for the mini sandwiches since there are always so many delicious treats at picnics. Smaller sizes mean you can sample more sweets. They also mean less mess, since they won’t have as much time to melt.  Pour some sprinkles in a bowl, and get rolling. Just like an ice cream cone with sprinkles, the extra taste and texture is delicious — and way more fun! Happy Fourth of July! Star spangled ice cream sandwiches Ingredients 1 dozen ice cream…

You can enter to win a KFC Colonel Sanders pool float

If you were hoping to spend your summer floating in the arms of an inflatable Colonel Sanders, you’re in luck. KFC is giving away several hundred oversized plastic pool toys that look just like the Colonel and hold a bucket of fast food giant’s famous fried chicken. But, you’ll need to fill out an entry form to get one of these bad boys — they’re not for sale. Deeming that “The best things in life are free,” instead, KFC is giving them away to a few hundred fortunate fans. If the float looks familiar, your TV game is strong. The oversized inflatable Sanders made an appearance in a recent KFC commercial announcing a new KFC sandwich called The Crispy Colonel. The ad featured actor George Hamilton lounging in the ocean, catching some sunshine, to give the sandwich name some literal imagery. https://www.instagram.com/p/BjKUC5qA1-q/?taken-by=kfc The inflatable is the latest in a long line of products…

Flying with food: What you can bring through TSA security checkpoints this holiday

Inching your way through the airport security line the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is stressful and time-consuming enough. The last thing you want to do is be pulled aside by a TSA agent and forced to toss that great bottle of wine you got Dad simply because you forgot the liquid laws. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) estimates that 2.4 million passengers will pass through security checkpoints each day leading up to Thanksgiving. And holiday travel is expected to be up throughout the whole 2017 season. “Last year was a record breaking year for the airline industry, and this year is expected to break that,” said Michael England, TSA National Spokesman. Food and drink play a big role in the holidays, so it’s likely that many of these millions of travelers will attempt to take with them edible gifts, baked goods or maybe even a side dish of some sort. Fortunately for travelers, agency stipulations don’t have to…

It’s good for our tastebuds if we mix things up every so often. Try this roasted red pepper sauce on anything you would typically top with a tomato sauce for an instant, restaurant-worthy upgrade. It’s a unique flavor all on its own, and it will give new life to those dishes you’ve made dozens or even hundreds of times before. It looks like tomato sauce, but the creamy, fiery flavor will surely make you a fan. Roasted Red Pepper Sauce Ingredients 16 oz. jar of roasted red peppers 2 tbsp water 2.5 tbsp butter 3-4 cloves of garlic 1 tbsp dried basil 1 tbsp dried oregano 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional) healthy dose of fresh cracked pepper 1/3 cup heavy cream (if using on pizza, use 1/4 or less) Directions Add peppers to blender along with 1-2 tbsp of extra liquid from the jar they came in. It’s a bit acidic, but can…
