Getting engaged and marrying the love of your life is exciting enough, but then you get to put together a registry. Wayfair, an online retailers of home furnishing, décor and more, took a look at what couples across the country are putting on their must-have home goods lists, and then found what the most popular item in the state was. Some states are predictable — of course Vermont wants cheese plates. Still others are less so — Alaskans are particular about their coasters. But overall, the data is an interesting look into people’s lives, and possibly a helpful guide if you’re attending a wedding in the U.S. this year. Study says couples who drink together have happier marriages

People are constantly trying to find the secret to a successful relationship. Is it love? Understanding? Laughter? According to one study, the answer is alcohol. The study published in The Journals of Gerontology Series B: Psychological Series, couples who sip together, stay together. The report found that relationships where partners drank together had less negative relationship quality over time — particularly among wives. “Wives who reported drinking alcohol reported decreased negative marital quality over time when husbands also reported drinking and increased negative marital quality over time when husbands reported not drinking,” a summary of the study says. According to Reuters, nearly 3,000 couples participated in the study. On average, the couples had been together for 33 years — two thirds of those were on their first marriage. The study asked participants how often and how much they drink, then asked if they found their spouse “irritating, critical or too demanding.”…

Supreme Court rules in favor of Colorado baker who refused to create a wedding cake for gay couple

The Supreme Court ruled on Monday in favor of a Colorado baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a heterosexual couple. In 2012, bakery owner Jack Phillips turned away David Mullins and Charlie Craig because he said heterosexuality was against his religious beliefs. The official ruling for the case — Masterpiece Bakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission — was 7-2. In 2014, the Colorado Civil Rights Commission decided that Masterpiece Bakeshop’s rights had been violated, and in 2016, the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative nonprofit, petitioned for the Supreme Court to take the case. According to CNN, The Supreme Court’s ruling held that the commission showed hostility toward Philips’s religious beliefs. The case was one of the most anticipated of the year. Britain’s Prince Harry tied the knot with Hollywood’s Meghan Markle in what some may consider a fairy tale wedding. Throughout their married lives, the royal couple will receive many perks like travel and tax dollars, but among them is one perk that they share with all of us commoners. Research has shown that being married reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. According to a study published in December in the Journal of the American Heart Association, marriage has an actual positive impact on the heart. It’s the first study of its kind to show an association between marital status and heart-disease related deaths. “I was somewhat surprised by the magnitude of the influence of being married,” said Dr. Arshed A.
