Authentic Maldivian breakfast to try at home (mas huni)

Besides all of the fun and interesting people you meet, one of the most memorable aspects of traveling, for me, is the food (of course). I’m talking about enjoying local cuisines and new foods that can broaden your horizons and give your taste buds something brand new to crave when you get home. I discovered a super simple breakfast dish during a recent holiday in the Maldives I couldn’t wait to make it when I got home. Maldivian cuisine is an exotic blend of rich flavors and regional influences from neighboring countries like Sri Lanka and India. Dishes range from a mild spiciness to a delicate sweetness, often times straddling the two. Eat traditional Maldivian food and you’ll fall in love with complex curries and easy-to-eat coconut-oil fried finger foods. Maldivian cuisine, also called Dhivehi cuisine, is largely based on three items: coconuts, fish, and starches. This tasty dish, called mas…

The snacks Martha Stewart never travels without

There are some foods that should not be packed for the office, a plane, or any public space. Tuna fish, hard-boiled eggs, smelly cheese — anything that is going to be offensive to other people in proximity to you. But when you’re Martha Stewart, you can do whatever you want. Stewart recently spoke to the New York Times and shared that her go-to travel snack is none other than hard-boiled eggs. “My hard-boiled eggs are just so much better than any eggs on the plane,” Stewart said. “They’re from my own chickens. I take them for everybody I’m traveling with.” (Okay, it’s nice she shares.) For longer flights she says she might make “a delicious smoked salmon sandwich on seven-grain bread” or tabbouleh salad. Other Stewart-approved plane snacks include homemade yogurt with apple sauce. Basically, she comes prepared for any kind of hunger pang so she doesn’t have to eat what…

Make your own caribbean inspired seasoning for this tropical summer feast

Once you make your own spice blends, you’ll never go back. This seared tuna recipe couples sweet, tropical spices with savory herbs and just enough heat. The best thing about making your own spices is that you know exactly what you’re eating. (Where do all of those ingredients in McCormick’s come from anyway?) If that’s not convincing enough, you’ll be surprised how much better it tastes than pre-mixed spices off of the store shelf. If that’s still not enough, know that you can save tons of cash by making your own — spice mixes can be expensive! Give it a try by starting with this delicious Caribbean inspired jerk blend. Smother your favorite seared fish in the seasoning, top with pineapple salsa and serve with coconut rice for a summer celebration at home inspired by the flavors of the crystal blue waters and tropical tastes off of our southern shores. Garden Tuna Avocado Salad Wrap

If you’re not a fan of mayo, or if you’re trying to eat healthier, you’ll want to try this creamy substitute. Tuna salad wraps are a quick and tasty go-to dinner option anytime of the year, but if you’re making them with mayo and bread, you’re not exactly eating healthy. Try this recipe using avocado as a substitute and be well on your way to eliminating as many as 20 grams of bad fats from your meal. If you garden or keep lots of leafy veggies handy, this is also a great opportunity for a carb-swap out. Eliminate that processed bread or that heavy wrap, and use a large leaf of Swiss chard or Romaine instead. You’ll love the extra crunch it adds without adding any calories — A typically wrap can be as much as 150 calories, while a leafy green will only add about 10.
