Starbucks edges out Dunkin’ Donuts as American’s favorite coffee

A coffee king has been crowned for the coming year. Starbucks has taken the top spot as America’s favorite coffee, narrowly surpassing three-time honoree Dunkin’ Donuts for the Coffee and Quick Service Restaurant Brand of the Year. The Harris Poll shows that 11 percent of millennials and 10 percent of Gen X’ers visit a Starbucks daily. “Given the ever-present morning rush lines at Starbucks, the fact that millennials and Gen X make daily Starbucks runs might not be entirely surprising, but it is telling,” said Joan Sinopoli, vice president of brand solutions at The Harris Poll. “With its engaging rewards app and high-end Starbucks Reserve brand, Starbucks is proactively pursuing millennials and quite frankly, doing it better than most right now.” Restaurants continue to adapt to the millennial lifestyle and ordering methods such as Starbucks’ mobile app and rewards program could be contributing to the recent boost. The poll employed the EquiTrend…

Truly horrible vintage hot dog ads and recipes

For millions of Americans, summer means more hot dogs in their diet. And it seemingly always has. The hot dog, or frankfurter, was culturally imported from Germany, but was instantly popularized in the United States, where it became synonymous with the working-class. As a top-selling street food at hot dog stands and carts, the cased meat treat also became the food face of warm weather baseball games, amusement parks, and all things American culture. No one particular person is credited with inventing the steamed sausage roll we know today, but the earliest references of the word “hot dog” date to the late 19th century (1893) in the New Brunswick (New Jersey) Daily Times and the New York World. Anyone who has ever grown up knows there are unfortunate photos and experiences of our past we wish no one would ever see (Think: Hammer pants, frosted tips, or anything with glitter). The hot dog is no different.…

Starbucks “Pink Drink” Goes Public for Summer 2017

If you’ve never heard of the Starbucks “Pink Drink,” then you must not be female. Last summer, the picture perfect pink drink was the envy of every girly Instagram feed on the globe. It was beautiful, icy, mysterious and could only be ordered off of the company’s “secret menu.” Starbucks announced this week that the Pink Drink has now officially joined the  year-round menu. The legitimate recipe will replace water with coconut milk in a strawberry acai Starbucks Refresher drink with accents of passion fruit and will be topped with a scoop of strawberries. “We’re thrilled that the beloved Pink Drink is joining the Starbucks menu, just in time for the warmer spring months,” said Vivienne Long, Starbucks vice president, U.S. Retail Beverages said in a statement. “This delicious and refreshing drink is a celebration of our customers’ and baristas’ creativity and is just one of the 170,000 ways we craft beverages to…

Rise of rainbow foods makes way for colorful ‘oil slick’ home trend

With all of the attention going toward rainbow and unicorn foods recently, it seems like colorful kitchen décor was the natural next step. Behold the “oil slick” trend. The iridescent jewel-toned color scheme mimics the sheen you can find on spilled oil in the sunlight. The opalescent luster with its brilliant pinks, purples, greens, blues and oranges is mesmerizing to look at. The trend started to take over fashion, beauty products and gardening accessories as well, but you can find it in the kitchen on glassware, cutlery, flasks, candles and more in a range of prices. Groom’s Cakes You Have to See

If you’re attending weddings this year, chances are you’ll come across a groom’s cake on display next to, or near, the traditional wedding cake (okay, the bride’s cake). You may be wondering where this custom came from. Well, back in the day of Victorian England, favors were simple. Guests were sent home with a slice of wedding cake. During that time period, single female guests would take their piece of cake home and place it under their pillow. Legend said, the ladies would dream of their future hubby that night. This is where the name “groom’s cake” came from. But brides and grooms had to buy a second cake to make sure there was plenty to go around. The extra cake was kept in the kitchen and would have to be sliced, boxed and wrapped to go — adding additional costs to the affair. Brides and grooms realized that if they were going to spend…
