Big decision ahead? Eat a snack

You probably learned the hard way to never grocery shop on an empty stomach, that is, unless you want a cart full of pizza rolls and potato chips. But it turns out hunger doesn’t just lead to unhealthy decision making in the supermarket. Hunger can lead to poor long-term decision making in other areas, too. The study was recently published in the journal Psychonomic Bulletin & Review. Researchers set out to understand whether being hungry had an affect not just on decisions about food, but on money and music, too. Participants fasted for 10 hours prior to the study, then they were asked whether they would prefer food, money, or music now, or a greater amount of that item in the future. For anyone who has ever felt hungry, the results aren’t too surprising. Indeed, researchers found that being hungry led participants to make different choices, no matter the topic.…

The science behind ‘hangry’

Coworkers know the perils of the end of the day: that terrible time when people are ravenous to get home and gorge. It’s the perfect environment for bouts of ‘hanger’, a mix of hunger and anger, typically with some short-temperedness and grumpiness thrown in just for good measure. ‘Hanger’ has been in the news this week for finally becoming widely used enough to be accepted into the Oxford English Dictionary as an official entry, but where does ‘hanger’ really come from? And why can’t grown adults seem to get a handle on this feeling? After all, you’re probably not worried about when your next calories are coming from. The answer lies in the body processes that happen when your internal systems are low on food. Typically, carbs, proteins and fats are digested into simple sugars, amino acids and free fatty acids. There nutrients are passed into your bloodstream where they arrive…

What you should know about hunger and donating to your food bank this holiday

The season of giving is upon us, and while we’re gathering with friends and family and enjoying meals, it’s also important to remember those less fortunate. One in eight people will go hungry this holiday season. While the economy may be improving since the Great Recession, many Americans are still feeling the effects of underemployment, stagnant wages and rising costs of living. In fact, more than 46 million people each year turn to Feeding America, the largest nationwide network of food banks in the country, for extra support. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is part of this support network, and employees work year-round to combat staggering statistics in the local region. “More than 322,000 people are considered food insecure in our 11 county region in Southwestern Pennsylvania,” said Beth Burrell, Communications and PR manager at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (the Food Bank). “That means, those individuals don’t know where their next meal is coming…

New study shows walnuts can curb hunger

If you’re thinking about dropping a few pounds, it turns out walnuts might be an effective food in helping you control your cravings. A recent study showed that eating walnuts curbed participant’s appetites when they were shown “highly desirable” foods. The study, published in Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism, separated participants, all adults with BMIs considered obese, into two groups. One group was given smoothies containing 14 walnut halves, while the other half was given  smoothies with a placebo — one that replicated the taste, texture and calorie content of real walnuts. After drinking their assigned smoothies for five days, the participants were then asked to look at photos of high-fat foods like onion rings, low-fat foods like fresh fruits, and non-food related images like flowers for MRI testing. The participants were then set back on their normal diets for a month, before returning to the study and repeating the five-day walnut smoothie…
