This is how the ‘continental breakfast’ got its name

Maybe you booked one hotel over another because it served a free continental breakfast. The idea of starting your day with a complementary all-you-can-eat buffet is just what some travels dream of. But if you take a moment to think about it, there isn’t anything especially “continental” about juice and muffins. So what’s with the name? The term “continental breakfast” actually  originated in Britain in the mid-19th century. There, the phrase “the continent” refers to the countries occupying the mainland of Europe. Therefore, a “continental breakfast” denotes the type of breakfast you’d be served in places like France or Italy. Breakfasts in these countries are famously light and delicate when compared to the full English breakfast — a heaping plate of sausage, beans, toasts, eggs and more — or an American breakfast — usually some combination of sausages, bacon, pancakes, waffles, potatoes, and toast. As the nation grew and hotels…

Here’s why hotel room service is going away

If having a $25 hamburger delivered to your hotel room isn’t your idea of a deal, you’re not alone. Hotels know their room service prices aren’t very appetizing, so they’re looking to reinvent the way in-room dining handled. Cost is the main deterrent of room service for both guests and hoteliers. While hotel room service menus have a reputation for being wildly overpriced, running in-house dining is expensive for the hotel. “[Hotels are] just not seeing the return on this anymore,” Alex Susskind, associate professor of food-and-beverage management at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration is quoted as saying in the industry trade journal Restaurant Hospitality. “It’s expensive to maintain and the quality is hard to keep up. They are backing off, but not just deserting guests.” Instead, some hotels are taking advantage of many travelers’ desire to eat the local fare, so they’re teaming up with nearby restaurants for what…

Brad Pitt to open new restaurant, resort in Croatia

Soon, Brad Pitt will be able to add the title “hotelier” to his resume. The actor, activist, producer and father of six is the latest celebrity to step into the world of hospitality. People magazine reported Pitt’s plans to open a new luxury resort in Croatia. The massive development will break ground in at the small coastal town of Zablace and will also include a hotel, villa, shops, a golf course, and several restaurants, the Telegraph reports. The project is estimated to cost more than $1.5 billion and will be “a modern ecologically-responsible planned community.” The 52-year-old actor recently stayed overnight in Sibenik’s new Dogusevon Hotel, toured the town and embarked on a walking tour with a team of 10 people around the proposed site of his new investment. Among them was Nikola Basic, creator of the celebrated Sea Organ, a giant culture that creates music as water is passed through its…

Alarming incidents will have you avoiding hotel coffee and tea kettles

Boiling a hot cup of water for tea or coffee can be a relaxing way to unwind in your hotel room after a long day of traveling, but new information might have you thinking twice before using that kettle. Some guests may be using the hot water boiling appliance to clean dirty underwear. https://twitter.com/YugSTAR/status/900098691804971008 The alarming action came to light when someone presented a question to Twitter followers: “Real question: does anyone I know clean their underwear in a kettle when traveling?” But the question wasn’t an isolated incident. Similar rumors about people washing their undergarments in hotel kettles have been seen on Weibo, China’s Twitter-esque online social media site. Experts are warning of the dangers this type of action can leave for the next hotel guests. Dr. Heather Hendrickson, a senior lecturer in molecular biosciences at the Institute of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at Massey University in Auckland, told Gizmodo about the serious health…
