Where to score free donuts on National Doughnut Day

June 1 is National Doughnut Day. While we’re all about keeping our blood sugar relatively stable, it seems safe to cash in on the sweet deals offered by local and national doughnut shops on this merry food holiday — especially when they’re offered in honor of some pretty incredible ladies. The first official Doughnut Day was announced in 1938 as a nod to the “doughnut lassies,” who found that World War I soldier helmets were perfect for frying up dough and feeding to the troops on the front lines to raise morale. Whether you like your donuts glazed, jelly-filled or chocolate dipped, National Doughnut Day is a day to indulge in your favorites and remember a sweet moment in history. Here are some deals offered from the national doughnut chains. Your local shop might celebrate as well, so call ahead. Dunkin’ Donuts: Get a free classic doughnut with purchase of any beverage…

Krispy Kreme might not even be on your radar during your daily coffee run, but maybe it should be. Other food and drink categories were also included in the poll. Five Guys Burgers and Fries won for best burger restaurants. A tie took place between The Cheesecake Factory and Texas Roadhouse for best casual dining. Ben & Jerry’s received honors as top ice cream and fro-yo shop. And in a bit of a surprise, Taco Bell beat out Chipotle for best Mexican restaurants. Office workers consume a shocking number of extra calories in snacks every year

Glazed donuts, pretzels, salted peanuts. What is it about a 9-5 desk job that makes you want to eat all the darn time? You barely finish breakfast before your stomach is rumbling for a mid-morning snack or lunch. And let’s not even talk about those late afternoon hunger pangs. Whether it’s boredom or temptation that has you giving in to the slice of cake, the calories consumed present a huge cause for concern. According to a recent survey by Dutch food brand Kallø, all of those extra calories add up to a shocking 100,000 extra calories every year for the average woman. Your eyes probably just popped a little bit, and you might have even put down that potato chip — and that’s a good thing. All those extra calories are, of course, seriously adding to your waistline. 100,000 calories is the equivalent to eating 193 double cheeseburgers or 502 bars of chocolate. If you go…

If there’s one good thing these national food holidays give us, it’s plenty of freebies. This year will mark the 79th anniversary of National Donut Day — a day with a pretty awesome past, actually. National Doughnut Day More than Modern Marketing Ploy, Dates Back to WWI

It’s hard not to be jaded about national food holidays nowadays. With roughly 450 current food holidays announced, there’s one for every day of the year, and then some. Most of these days tend to be created by those who stand to directly financially benefit from the public awareness and media attention such a day can bring. For example, National Drive-Thru Day was the brainchild of the fast food chain Jack in the Box while National Peanut Butter Day was created by the National Peanut Board. New holidays are reviewed by a small committee, and the creator is charged up to $4,000. But if there is one that doesn’t deserve your cynicism, it’s National Doughnut Day, celebrated the first Friday of every June. The origins of National Doughnut Day date back much further than the modern food holidays, and it has a much deeper history, too. The day is as much about celebrating the people behind…

Starbucks edges out Dunkin’ Donuts as American’s favorite coffee

A coffee king has been crowned for the coming year. Starbucks has taken the top spot as America’s favorite coffee, narrowly surpassing three-time honoree Dunkin’ Donuts for the Coffee and Quick Service Restaurant Brand of the Year. The Harris Poll shows that 11 percent of millennials and 10 percent of Gen X’ers visit a Starbucks daily. “Given the ever-present morning rush lines at Starbucks, the fact that millennials and Gen X make daily Starbucks runs might not be entirely surprising, but it is telling,” said Joan Sinopoli, vice president of brand solutions at The Harris Poll. “With its engaging rewards app and high-end Starbucks Reserve brand, Starbucks is proactively pursuing millennials and quite frankly, doing it better than most right now.” Restaurants continue to adapt to the millennial lifestyle and ordering methods such as Starbucks’ mobile app and rewards program could be contributing to the recent boost. The poll employed the EquiTrend…
