How to make homemade chili seasoning

Skip the store-bought packets and make your own chili seasoning from scratch with spices you already have in your pantry. There’s a little game in my kitchen I like to play called, “How many tiny bottles of spices can I squeeze onto the shelf.” I have dried spices for all sorts of meals that I made once, needed a specific spice blend, and never made again. Thus, the spice just sits there with others that suffered the same fate, taking up valuable space in my tiny kitchen. Chili powder isn’t one of those. It’s so versatile, I’m actually happy to lend my leftover mix some shelf space. It’s great on everything from chili to tacos to roasted veggies. Put it on potatoes or even on top of mac and cheese or corn on the cob. What can’t you put chili powder on? Here is a spice blend that I want to…

Copycat Bonefish Grill bang bang shrimp sandwich

I was only introduced to Bonefish Grill Bang Bang shrimp last summer in South Carolina. Sure, the casual restaurant chain can be found at locations all over the country, but there was something about the crispy, fried shrimp and the creamy, spicy sauce that felt perfectly suited for the Deep South. During the winters, I definitely long for the flavors associated with summer, so as the snow continues to fall in the Northeast, my craving for this crunchy shrimp snack popped up, and I had to have it. With no location nearby, I went to work recreating this favorite Bonefish dish. But no matter where or when you eat it, Bang Bang Shrimp is an incredible treat. Serve it as a movie snack, as an appetizer, or all by itself. I threw mine on a delicious, fresh sandwich roll with crispy lettuce and carrot sticks. If you’re wondering how it compares — this Bang Bang…

Slow-cooker mexican turkey chili makes for a lean, hearty meal

If you’re trying to eat healthy, the Super Bowl comes at a super inconvenient time. Just a few weeks past the holidays, we’re hardly detoxed from those dozens of cookies and excess alcohol before BAM!: A whole day full of fattening foods. From buffalo chicken dip to countless foods smothered in cheese, there’s really no where to hide… But then again, who wants to settle for salad? I’ll be whipping up this easy turkey chili first thing in the morning so it’s ready by game time. Just 15 minutes of prep work and 4-5 hours on high in the slow cooker will have this tasty dish piping-hot in time for kick-off. Serve with tortilla chips, shredded Mexican cheese blend, and/or fresh avocado slices (I splurged and made some jalapeño corn bread, too), and you’ll have a hearty, healthy dish, that will satisfy your football-inspired cravings, but won’t leave you regretting your whole day.…

The sweet heat of carrot coconut soup

The thing that Thai food gets just right is the balance of sweet and spicy. While the chili sauce raises the heat, the coconut cools it down. This soup takes notes from the Southeast Asian cuisine, but it’s completely accessible to everyday cooks. After becoming a huge fan of Carrot Ginger soup last year, I thought I’d expand my carrot cuisine, and try a different take — Carrot Coconut soup. While this soup would be good all year long, the colors and flavors make it perfect for fall. I served it with a gooey brie grilled cheese on multigrain bread and a smear of apricot jam. The consistency of this soup is perfect for dunking. Carrot Coconut Soup Serves about 4 Ingredients 1/4 butter (or olive oil if you’re vegan) 1 pound carrots, washed, chopped 1 large onion, chopped salt pepper 2 cups (1 can) vegetable broth, (chicken broth if non-vegetarian) 14…
