7 reasons you should eat more cherries

When you eat cherries, you can enjoy so much more than just their delicious sweet taste. Yes, they’re the perfect quick snack — just rinse and go — but those tiny cherries are loaded with big health benefits too. Here are 7 good reasons to start snacking on this superfood today: 1. They’re a low-sugar sweet tooth fix Sweet cherries are delicious and sweet, but unlike that double scoop ice cream cone, they have zero added sugar. What’s more, they’re low on the glycemic index (22) compared to other fruits [grapes (46), peaches (42), plums (39)], which means their natural sugars will be released into your bloodstream more slowly, and you won’t feel that spike and crash of high-sugar snacks. All this makes them a go-to for folks with diabetes. 2. They’ll bring you better sleep If you’re tossing and turning all night long, try drinking cherry juice — or…

Cherry almond smoothie

Cherries are totally underrated as smoothie ingredients. I had been experimenting with new smoothie flavors, when I realized, I had not made one cherry-based smoothie — ever! Cherries are full of antioxidants, promote healthy sleep, and may even reduce post-exercise inflammation and pain. For someone training for a marathon like me, it’s an ingredient to definitely be added into a daily diet. If you’re unable to find them, you’ll (sadly!) have to wait until summer, then pit and freeze a bunch for later. Cherries are sweeter than strawberries, so they hold up well against almond milk. Greek yogurt and chia seeds add enough protein to make this morning mix a well-rounded meal. Enjoy! Cherry almond smoothie Ingredients 1 cup frozen cherries (or fresh, pits removed) 1/2 cup almond…

Drink cherry juice before bed for a better sleep, study shows

You can get a better night of sleep by taking a swig of cherry juice, than from that nightcap of fermented grapes. It turns out that Montmorency cherry juice contains high levels of melatonin, a natural hormone responsible for regulating our internal body clock. People with sleep issues commonly take this hormone in pill form, but experts say that the tart cherry juice works just as well. One study examined the effects the special cherry juice had on insomniacs. Eight participants were told to drink two glasses of Montmorency cherry juice per day — one in the morning and one right before bed. Compared to the placebo, the cherry juice group ended up averaging an extra 1 hour and 24 minutes of quality sleep time per night. So what is so special about Montmorency cherries? For starters, these little red wonders contain 40 percent of your daily recommended vitamin A (cell regeneration and vision).…
