Book Review: Canning goes Back to Basics for beginners

This time of year always seems to turn in to a game of pass the produce. Your neighbor has too many tomatoes. Your friend gets extra cucumbers in her CSA. And every week, your co-worker tries to pawn off a basket of his peppers. There are worse problems to have. This year, instead of saying no — or continuing to pass the goods down the line to other friends — pick up a new skill for this plethora of produce, and learn to can. Canning is the next natural extension of our increasing national awareness of eating fresh, healthy and local. Grandma knew canning could feed her family healthy meals all year long, and what’s old usually becomes new again. Canning — much like knitting (can you believe it?) — is back on the scene. But between tools, temperatures and safety measures, the age-old practice can leave first-timers at a loss (and wishing Grandma was still…

Here’s how your favorite chefs whip up scrambled eggs

Celebrity chefs have tons of unusual, creative recipes they’re individually known for, but what happens when we ask them to take us back to the basics? One of the first foods many of us learn to make is scrambled eggs, so virtually everyone in America (and beyond) has a tried-and-true way of preparing the classic breakfast meal. Check out the footage below to see if you can pick up any pointers from the pros. Or maybe you’ll decide your way was right all along! Anthony Bourdain https://youtu.be/sBJESSMD8qA Anthony Bourdain’s declares his simple style as “old school.” “Like a lot of simple things, people find a way to overcomplicate them and screw them up.” Bourdain leaves out any additions like milk or cream, and makes his morning egg just about the egg. He recommends cracking them into an intermediate bowl and beating, but not over-beating, the eggs. Gordon ramsey https://youtu.be/PUP7U5vTMM0 Ramsay’s fluffy scrambled eggs are…

Chef Sets Guinness World Record by Cooking for 53 Consecutive Hours

We’ve all had long days at work when mustering an hour more of energy to cook dinner when we get home seems impossible. Tell that to India’s celebrity chef and TV personality Vishnu Manohar, who cooked a sequence of 20 different meals for 53 hours straight. Manohar raised both hands up in the air with “victory” fingers to mark the end of his record breaking feat. He accomplished his marathon cooking weekend from a stage in view of a large public audience who lined up as the seemingly bionic chef served up plate after plate of food. Although he reached his goal time, he continued for an additional 4 hours to cover the five minute breaks he had taken every 8 to 10 hours, as allowed per the Guinness World Record official rules. As a TV chef, Manohar is accustomed to cooking on his feet for long hours and told the Times of India…

Rihanna’s Personal Chef Gives Us Insight to the Pop Star’s diet

If you’ve ever wondered what pop stars eat and who cooks for them, Bon Appétit recently cooked up an interview with Rihanna’s person chef, Debbie Soloman. In the interview, they discuss everything from how she landed the job to what she cooks for the famous multiplatinum-selling artist and shoe designer. The Jamaican-born chef credits Rihanna’s mom for helping her learn the nuances of the Barbadian and Guyanese food Rihanna grew up eating in Barbados and often requests, but Soloman said Rihanna is a “moody eater,” so the pop star doesn’t decide what she wants to eat until that day, rather than planning out a menu for the week. Rihanna eats “every protein that you can think of,” along with vegetables, rice, and pasta. The singer and chef also travel with a case of spices that includes bouillon-like maggi cubes, curry, jeera (also known as cumin seeds), Old Bay seasoning, adobo, and five-spice, as well as…
