Ditch the bacon and booze to reduce your risk of cancer, study says

You already know that frequent bacon, greasy cheeseburgers and booze are the fast track to packing on the pounds, but unfortunately, that’s not the only risk. If you live by the diet plan of “everything in moderation,” you may want to reconsider. A new study shows that consuming these items, even occasionally, can increase your risk of cancer. According to new findings from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), ditching booze and bacon entirely could reduce your risk of cancer up to 40 percent. The WCRF research surveyed 51 million people and focused more on making specific dietary recommendations than ever before, according to the Evening Standard. Researchers now urge people to limit consumption of soft drinks, processed foods — like bacon — and reduce drinking, while eating red meat only in moderation. Researchers also recommended staying away from sugar and ditching fast food entirely. As more countries adopt “Western”…

Hamburgers vs hot dogs: which is healthier?

It’s almost the Fourth of July, and chances are you’re about to face the toughest choice of your summer: hot dog or hamburger? If you’re thinking “Both!” you’re in good company. But if you’re trying to make healthier choices this holiday, “both” probably shouldn’t be your response. Consider what a registered dietitian says about this age-old American debate. The Hot Dog Hot dogs typically have about 150 calories. Add a bun and some condiments, and you quickly hit about 300 calories — still a very reasonable amount of calories for a dinner entree. Their smaller size gives them a caloric advantage over the hamburger, but there are some disadvantages to hot dogs. Hot dogs have about 5 grams of saturated fat, which is pretty high for what you’re getting. They’re also packed with sodium (about 500 mg in contrast to 375 mg a burger might have) and sodium nitrites or nitrates, which may…

Wisconsin man chows down on his 30,000th McDonald’s Big Mac

A warning for all the fast food lovers out there: this diet is not recommended. A retired Wisconsin prison guard ate his 30,000th Big Mac last week — 46 years after eating his first. WBAY-TV reports that Fond du Lac resident Don Gorske holds the Guinness World Record for eating the most Big Macs. The 64-year-old has eaten at least one Big Mac every day since May 17, 1972. “If I go for 40,000, that’ll take me another 14 years or whatever like that. I don’t think people celebrate 35,000 at all, so we’re probably looking at 14 more years down the road, and I’ll be 78 years old then! So we’ll have to see how I’m doing then, you know?” Gorske told WBAY-TV. Michael “Jim” Delligatti, a Pennsylvania-based McDonald’s franchisee, invented the Big Mac in 1967. Delligatti died in November 2016 at the age of 98. While the Big…

McDonald’s is officially changing its name in China

McDonald’s has carried the “Golden Arches” nickname for decades, but it appears, in one country it’s now the global fast-food giant’s official moniker. McDonald’s has officially changed its named in China, according to CNN Money. Previously known as Maidanglao, a Chinese rendering of its English name, it switched to Jingongmen, which loosely translates to “Golden Arches.” Not everyone was happy with the news. Chinese McNugget and Big Mac fans took to Weibo, a Chinese social media platform, to vent their opinions. One user said it sounded like one of China’s stuffy state-owned companies, and others said it was “rustic” or backward. But all the backlash might be for nothing. A spokesperson told CNN Money that the name change only applies to the restaurant chain’s business registration and that the branding will stay the same. McDonalds has had restaurants in China since 1990 and today has about 2,500 in operation. The name changes comes…
