If you’re hoping to receive a sweet treat today, you’re not alone.
Candy is the most wanted Valentine’s Day gift with a full 94% of Americans hoping to receive chocolate for Valentine’s Day—more than any other gift. And more than 40% of people say a heart-shaped box makes the gift even sweeter, according to a survey conducted by the National Confectioners Association.
“Candy plays an important role in helping people celebrate special occasions like Valentine’s Day,” John Downs, president & CEO of the National Confectioners Association is quoted saying on the NCA website.
More than 40 million heart-shaped chocolate boxes were sold for Valentine’s Day.
Caramel-flavored chocolates topping the list. Chocolate-covered nuts are a close second.
Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love, but what would this holiday be without chocolate? Because we can all seemingly agree that chocolate is the best part of the day (any day, really), let’s take a look at our favorite candy’s shining moments on the silver screen.
1. Forrest Gump — Momma always says…
Chocolate had it’s shining moment of the decade, when in 1994 Tom Hanks uttered the following famous 15 words.
2. The Goonies — Baby… Ruuuuth
No 80s or 90s kid can forget seeing Sloth and Chunk’s terrifying yet heartwarming bond happen over a Baby Ruth.
3. I Love Lucy — Lucy and Ethel get wrapped up
We’ll always remember Lucille Ball’s comedic genius and hilarious mishaps at the chocolate factory.
4. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory — Greedy Augustus Gloop falls in the chocolate river
The lowest hanging fruit on this list. It’s an obvious choice, but one that simply could not be left out.
5. Friends — Monica the candy lady
Now on Netflix, Friends has reached multiple generations of viewers over the past two decades who will remember this scene with Monica’s chocolate crazed neighbors.
6. Chocolat — Johnny Depp licks his fingers
The entire movie pretty much qualifies, but who doesn’t like watching Johnny Depp lick chocolate from his fingers?
7. The Polar Express — A whole song about hot chocolate
Tom Hanks makes the list again with this Christmas classic.
9. Seinfeld — Candy cutlery
Seinfeld has a funny reference to pretty much anything you can think of. So of course, chocolate.
10. Caddie Shack (BONUS!)
It’s not appetizing like the others, but this “chocolate” scene managed to recreate a major summertime anxiety none of us can deny.
