A poor diet is worse than smoking or high blood pressure, study shows

You don’t smoke, your blood pressure is in-check, and you’re not obese. So what if you don’t carefully watch your diet, right? Wrong! According to a recent study published in the Lancet, poor diet is the leading cause of death worldwide—contributing to more deaths than well-know risk factors like tobacco use and high blood pressure. Researchers analyzed dietary habits of adults aged 25 and older between 1990 and 2017 across 195 countries. They compared those findings with how it affected their chances of an early death. In 2017, they found that 11 million deaths (that’s 22 percent) of the deaths over that time frame were caused by poor diet. The breakdown? About 9.5 million deaths were due to cardiovascular disease. Another 900,000 were due to diet-related cancers. More than 330,000 deaths were from diabetes, and more than 136,000 deaths were caused by kidney diseases. Not only were there more dietary-related…

The most popular diets of 2018

Research has shown us that adopting a daily healthy lifestyle and routine is the best way to shed pounds and keep them off. But that doesn’t stop us from looking for the latest strategy for losing weight in a hurry. Google has published its list of the Top 10 Most Searched Diets of 2018. This year, diets fell largely in two categories — those that skip or cut carbs, or those that restrict eating to certain hours or days of the week. Google receives more than 90 percent of the world’s searches, so the search engine’s list is probably a decent gauge of what people were actually interested in a trying out this year, or at the very least, which diets have grown tremendously in popularity from 2017 to 2018. Noticeably absent this year, are former heavyweight diet methods paleo and Atkins. So, how did Google do? Did you search…

Yo-yo dieting can lead to early death, study suggests

You pack on some serious pounds, then work hard to drop the weight — but then put it all back on again. Aside from being incredibly frustrating for the individual, experts are now warning that these dramatic fluctuations in weight are linked to a slew of negative side effects — including an increased risk of death. The new study was published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Researchers investigated the health risks of yo-yo dieting by examining the results from the 3,600 men and women who participated in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study. They found that dramatic weight swings was associated with higher risk of mortality. One exception to this study is for obese individuals who crash diet and experience weight loss. Those people were found to be less likely to develop type-2 diabetes over time. However, perfectly healthy people who quickly lose and gain…

Men are embarrassed to adopt vegetarian diets, study shows

Vegetarian and vegan diets might be having a moment, but according to a study conducted by the British University of Southhampton, men are embarrassed to order vegetarian food. Researches with the Man Food Project surveyed 22 men to explore the social and cultural pressures men are under when it comes to dining out. The group was split into three categories: men who were vegetarian for environmental reasons, those who wanted to build muscle without relying on meat, and those who were on economically restricted diets. In most cases, regardless of the reasons behind their diet, the participants expressed embarrassment and shame around ordering meatless meals. “A number of them relayed different experiences that indicated shame, embarrassment, or conflict-avoidance that on occasion led them to eat meat, or offer meat to guests in their house,” Dr. Emma Roe, lead researcher and professor at the University of Southhamton, told Munchies. Roe explained…

This is the hottest diet on social media right now

If you’re on a diet and you don’t take to social media to hashtag about it, are you really on a diet? With all of the #mealprep, #nocarb, and #foodporn hashtags topping the mega-millions on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, it seems just about everyone loves posting pictures of their eating habits. But whether it’s people going crazy for keto, those pushing paleo, or those running on nothing but #rawfood, it can be hard to tell which diet is actually trendiest. Within each diet there is undoubtedly an active community supporting each other and sharing tips and recipes. But which diet has the largest following online? Researchers at Brandwatch analyzed Twitter to uncover which diet floods feeds with the largest volume of related posts. Then they looked to top “influencers” — those with particularly large followings — to determine which diet trend is most common. It turns out that going vegan…

High-fat diets might not be best for weight loss, one study shows

If you’ve gone on a diet recently, you’ve probably been told by a friend or even a fitness professional that a low-carb, high-fat diet is the fastest way to fitness. The theory goes that this type of diet will force your body into ketosis, where it will burn fat instead of carbs, prompting you to shed more pounds. But a new study suggests that this might not be the case. The new study from the University of Aberdeen in the Chinese Academy of Sciences was published in Cell Metabolism. Researchers found that mice who ate high-fat diets gained more weight over a three-month period than mice who ate high-carb diets. And actually, the mice fed carbs, didn’t gain any weight at all, while the high-fat diet produced overweight mice. Researchers at Aberdeen studied how mice responded to 30 different diets, which varied widely in fat and carb content. The diet-appropriate foods…

Your workplace is adding 1,300 calories to your diet every week

The next time Karen from accounting brings in a box of baked goods for the big morning meeting, remember to stay strong. All of those extra office goodies are adding an extra 1,300 calories to your diet every week! A large CDC study of 5,222 people found that about a quarter of Americans eat food at work at least once a week. Free food made up most of the excess calories, while food and beverage vending machines in the cafeteria rounded out the count. In other words, employees are eating unnecessary empty calories — almost always of the processed variety — while they’re at work. The food tended to be high in solid fats and/ or added sugars. The most common foods were pizza, soda, cookies, brownings, cakes, and pies, NBC reported. And since most of this food is offered for free, it makes it difficult to avoid temptation. The CDC offered one solution.…

The big differences between Keto and Paleo diets

Paleo and Keto diets (short for “ketogenic”) are nothing new. They’ve been around far longer than the fit celebrities and lifestyle bloggers who sing their praises. (Famous Paleo followers include Jessica Biel and Matthew McConaughey, while Halley Berry and Kourtney Kardashian both go crazy for Keto.) So what’s the difference? You’ve likely heard these names tossed around in certain social circles or at the gym, but maybe couldn’t speak to what each requires you to do. Here is a full breakdown of what each is and the major differences between them. What is the keto diet? The primary goal of the Keto diet is weight loss. You are essentially converting yourself from a “sugar burner” to a “fat burner,” according to NutritionalKetosisforHealth.com. This eating plan is all about minimizing carbs and increasing fats to encourage your body to use fat as its primary form of energy. While every dieter will have slightly different needs,…

You can lose weight twice as fast with this diet method, research shows

When we want to shed some pounds, we typically look to dropping sugars and carbs from our diets. But a new study reveals that cutting back on sweeteners and breads might not be the most effective method after all. The most successful weight loss could come from ditching something more dieter-friendly at first glance — meat. The research published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition revels that dieters adopting vegetarian diets not only boost their metabolism but end up losing more weight overall — twice as much weight, in fact. A group of 74 participants with type 2 diabetes followed strict vegetarian diets of grains, vegetables, fruits and nuts. What researchers saw was that the vegetarian diet was twice as effective as the more common diet method at helping people shed pounds. Participants on the veggie diet lost on average 14 pounds vs. the typical 7 pounds. But the participants didn’t…
